We found this restaurant by accident n was satisfied of the meal. I like it when we can chose the size of the meat which we will not wasted the food... I prefer fillet type than the cutlet... More crispy n thin...

This is apparently a chain restaurant (Wako is a restaurant group). This location is on the 11th floor of the Isetan department store that is at Kyoto Train Station (the 11th floor is all restaurants and you can find something for anyone - they all have plastic food displays so you can see what you're getting). They have picture menus in English. It is a clean and streamlined restaurant.

Tonkatsu are breaded and fried boneless pork cutlets and - as the name of the restaurant would suggest - this is their specialty. They offer various set menus, which would be the best value. Some of the set menus have pork AND chicken/oysters/fish, in various combinations. They also have some pricier pork cutlets.

My boyfriend and I each had set menus: his was pork/oysters and mine was pork/chicken with cheese/shrimp. They both came with miso, rice, pickled vegetables, cabbage, and a seafood custard soup (sounds odd, but tastier than you'd expect if you can get past the fact that it is seafood-flavored custard). For what we paid - I think each meal was about $15-16 - this was a lot of food. Neither of us finished our whole meals...AND you can have unlimited rice and cabbage! We didn't since we were full, but what a bargain!

It was very tasty and there was a lot to eat. I think two people could probably split one meal (if they will let you do that). Worth a visit if you're near one.

Tonkatsu Wako is among the best of several inviting restaurants located on the 11th floor of the Isetan department store connected to the ultra-modern Kyoto Train Station. Don't let the fact that this is a Japanese chain restaurant deter you from this welcoming, attractive and comfortable dining spot.

In early January, we had a short wait for lunch on comfortable chairs. As soon as we were seated at our table, our server brought us green tea and wet napkins to wash our hands. Feel free to ask for water. (If your server doesn't know English: "Miso o kudasai." -- or more politely: "O-miso o kudasai." You can just point to the menu with English translations for your meal choice.) The lunch meals include shredded cabbage salad, miso soup with tiny clams, a bowl of rice, and pickles. You can choose pork filet or loin, shrimp, ground beef or crab croquettes, chicken, etc., or combinations. In our party of 3, one ordered the pork loin & shrimp combination (~ $12.80) and the other two ordered the lunch special that included pork loin, shrimp, and oysters (a seasonal offering) along with a savory egg custard (only ~ $12.10). Refills of shredded cabbage, rice, soup, and green tea are free. Lemon and a delicious tartar sauce are served with the seafood. Your server will point out the sauces and seasonings to use on the components of your meal. The fried meat and shellfish are pleasantly non-oily and the bottomless cabbage salad is a wonderfully fresh side.

There are a few more Tonkatsu Wako restaurants in Kyoto, including one in the B2 basement of this Isetan store. Other branches are located throughout Japan, with the greatest number (200!) in/around Tokyo. Check the fine website for locations and pictures of menu items:

Found this restaurant during an evening stroll through the Kyoto Station 11th floor food court. We had wanted tonkatsu and were so pleased we decided on a return visit.

We enjoyed both the regular tonkatsu and the shrimp tempura and tonkatsu combination. Cabbage and rice refills are a nice touch. I don't expect to find anything that rivals these dishes in the USA.

Staff were most pleasant and helpful.
