Description: Established in 1856, Shimogamosaryo has a history of more than 160 years. It is located in Shimogamo, one of Kyoto’s most historic and scenic areas and the home of Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its own beautiful garden, the restaurant itself symbolized Kyoto. We are certain that you will enjoy our traditional yet innovative Kyoto-style dishes, which are inspired by the changes of the four seasons. “One time, one counter” is a cherished belief derived from the spirit of Sado (traditional Japanese tea ceremony) that encapsulates our desire to give you a memorable and unique culinary experience. Through our cuisine and hospitality, we share the beauty and original culture of Kyoto with our guests from all over the world. We look forward to welcoming and serving you with our unique Kyoto hospitality.

Went to this place that was highly recommended by the Ritz Carlton Kyoto. Well, could not have been a poorer experience. The restaurant was empty, food was really average. Staff was not really nice and spoke very poor English. The only time they were nice was when they brought the bill, 700 euros for 4 people, and we did not order any bottle of wine or sake. Would really NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

We had a wonderful evening at Shimogamosaryo in May 2018. Service was very friendly and waitress spoke reasonably well english. The was slight problem with drink order as things got lost in translation but this didn’t effect the experience too much.

We were seated in a private cabinet with glass walls towards the garden. Atmosphere was peaceful and sophisticated. There were some other customers to be heard but not seen.

About 10-course Kaiseki dinner was served in appropriate tempo and dishes were explained to us sufficiently. Food was well prepared, carefully and beautifully presented. Delghtful cup of macha was served to end the meal with.

Though rather expensive, we were very satisfied with our evening in this traditional and respected restaurant. I recommend this place for a special evening to experience the best that Japanese cuisine has to offer.

From a person who has eaten many kaiseki dinners over his life, the food and ambience make this place a "Can't Miss" experience in Kyoto. We had a private tatami dining room, which had chairs which was nice. We had a very polite server dedicated to our meal who explained each course in fair detail. Each course was delicious balancing the food for the season with many local ingredients (a bit obvious since I was at a kaiseki dinner after all). We brought our 7 year old son and there is a delicious kids meal. The private room means that you can also spread out a little. In all the meal was a premium and authentic experience and was a good value.

At the end of the meal, ask the restaurant to call you a cab because it is hard to catch on there - but I believe the meter starts running in the driveway so I would avoid lingering after the cab has arrived.

I was invited to this restaurant by two Japanese friends, one night, while visiting Kyoto. The restaurant is charming. This is an authentic Japanese restaurant. The restaurant is clean and beautiful! The furniture is quite delicate and fine. The service is impeccable. The waiters are very kind Japanese women who wear traditional Japanese clothing. The food was simply spectacular, just to die for. The menu was chosen by my hosts. I enjoyed 9 sequential, small dishes of Japanese food from a very delicate soup, to different plates of vegetables, fish, meat, and snails, and a very tasty, fresh tropical fruit. The combination of flavours, the delicate ornamental presentation of each dish, and the historical aspects of each dish, made of this evening a unique experience to understand Japan.
The price is right. It is however, expensive; therefore, you should be willing to spend a substantial amount of money. To me, it was worth it. I will never forget that night; a night of tradition, history, flavours, and friendship.
