This restaurant does not look very fancy or bright in Shijo especially at night, we had no idea where to go to eat and decided to go in and have a try, Well. it's a gem, the restaurant is over 150 years old. The place consist of 3 or 4 level (cant remember exactly...), we went in and told to be seated in the basement. The speciality is soba and herring (fish). The herring are marinated as like in the good old days which has very distinctive taste of sweetness, soya etc. Price starts from 1000 yen. The signature Herring Soba would cost you 1200 yen.
The crews are all female, mostly elder one, but they can speak a little bit of English.
If you really like the taste and wanna bring back home, they also have packed and sealed noodle, fish, pickles for sale at the entrance/exit.
I was glad to have a chance to try such delicious food which is unique and very Kyoto style, you can't simply find it in anywhere (at least not back home).
