We were glad to find an Indian restaurant in Kyoto and this one is a worthy option. The menu has everything that you would expect from a decent Indian joint. The service was a little spotty, but the food was mostly just fine, although it was strange to have to pay for rice (300 yen for one serving of "Japanese rice" or 800 yen for "Indian rice."). On balance this place is just fine, but not my favorite Indian restaurant in the world.

We were part of a group of 6 that ate here and shared a variety of food. The restaurant is somewhat miss-named as Kerala is in southern India and the cuisine was primary northern Indian. That said, everything was delicious and we all had a nice time. The service seemed to drag at times but that is my only complaint.

We came here twice whilst staying in Kyoto. Can highly recommend the masala dosa for starter. Mains were excellent and lovely flavours. Highly recommend especially for vegetarians.

The dishes are very authentic Indian. Both South Indian recipes and North though don't go along with Kerala name of the restaurant but the owner-Mahesh - half Indian-half Japanese knows what tastes good. No doubt he is ensuring personal services and food is surprisingly very tasty.Of course charges make you feel you are in Japan and having better Indian dishes but ultimately its -value for money. can be visited if you are in Kyoto and look forward for delicious Indian food.

Living in and around Kyoto, I have been eating at Kerala for 26 years now, and it is unquestionably the best Indian restaurant in the city, and, at lunch-time, one of the best-value Indian meals you'll ever have. Though run by a half-Japanese, half-Indian man now, its cooks are all from India, and its three set menus at lunchtime--especially the Kerala Lunch (for just 850 yen) or the Vegetarian Lunch (for 1250), both thails that essentially allow you to sample two curries, raita, salad, rice, pappadoms and exceptional naans--are hard to beat. At dinner, a regular curry will cost two or three times as much, and may not be worth your time.

Note, however, that this restaurant is not near Kyoto Station--it is across from the Kyoto Royal Hotel downtown, on the second floor of a building on the western side of Kawarmachi street, just north of Sanjo--and that, despite its name (its original owner came from South India), it does not offer South Indian food other than its very good dosas. Note, too, that Indian food in Japan tends to be much lighter, more delicate and more lightly spiced than Indian food elsewhere, and those looking for what they might find in London, Toronto or Delhi may come away disappointed.

If you know what you're looking for, though, especially in the lunch-hours, you'll see why this place packs in regulars, mostly Japanese, year after year while other Indian restaurants come and go.
