“Great indian food in Kyoto”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

Me and my wife went to this restaurant after looking some review here in trip advisor, the food quality was pretty good, good service and they speak in english without any problem. We ordered one starter, three main courses and two different type of naan.
If you love indian food and is not your first day in Kyoto it's a nice place to go, but if you will visit Kyoto just for few days there are absolutely better place to go.

We visit Ashoka every time we're in Kyoto. The menu is extensive and the food is wonderful. The naan is superb!

“Limited choice and curiously lacking in Indian flavour”
Reviewed June 4, 2012 via mobile

We ordered tandoori mixed grill as one main with roti, and chicken masala with rice and nan, and the other meal. The tandoori arrived first, served to both of us and afterwards the single dish of masala was Served with both types of bread. In addition we had a glass of milk and two soda waters. Both meals were overly spicy hot, i had specifically ordered tandori for its mild flavours so unless you like hot hot food be careful, the masala was distinctly like a European Chinese curry. Also at 6500¥ I felt it was not value for money with poor service and. we were not offered a smoking or non smoking area and assumed it was non smoking restaurant however the next guest who arrived after us suggested to the waiter that as they wished to smoke the should sit farther away from us as we had a young child with us. considerate patrons, not so considerate staff.

“Excellent Indian cuisine - but watch the bill”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

My husband and I loved this Indian restaurant, which is conveniently situated in the main shopping street of Kyoto. I am vegetarian and was overjoyed to have such a lovely range of familiar dishes from which to chose. It was easy to understand the options listed on the menu and relaxing to sit back and know that the dishes really would be fully vegetarian. We ate at this restaurant on two occasions during the eight days we holidayed in Kyoto.

One significant warning however: after our first visit to the restaurant we realized we had been overcharged significantly (between 20% and 30%). We had not been handed an itemised bill and therefore had to work out the bill in our head. When we went there again, we made sure we listed our expenses on a scrap of paper and therefore paid the correct amount. I think the staff realized we were doing this. Despite requesting a written account, we were never given one.

I've never experienced a bill problem at an Indian restaurant before. Apart from this, however, the food and ambience are excellent.
