“Great hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2014 via mobile

We decided not to do the set menu and rather focus on the meats. As you can imagine after a week in japan we have eaten quite a bit of rice so we didn't need to do the set menu which includes rice and dessert . The waitress and chef spoke just enough English to help. The menu is served raw and they cool it for you on your own personal hot stone at the table or bar. Afterward we wandered the area a bit and found some great bars. Try Rub a Dub for a fun reggae night. Or try the green tea liquor at Ishimaru Shoten. Both bars are hole-in-the wall bars down stairs from the sidewalk. Ishimaru feels very authentic.

“A good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2014

We really enjoyed our meal here. We had the menu that gave you some of everything, so we could try it all, and the waiter (owner?) was very helpful, for example in asking us if there were any bits of a chicken we'd prefer not to eat, and advising us on which sauce goes best with which meat. We felt that we'd had very personal service. The food tasted very good. It didn't feel like a tourist restaurant to us - we appeared to be the only English speakers there. I'd recommend it.

“Unique expérience with good food and ambience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

I was skeptical to come here based on some of the negative reviews below but glad we came. Myself along with my family 5 of us total (and one 2 yo) came here to dine. I will say that the restaurant is small and does get quite "smoky" when all the burners are going and you will leave the restaurant with your clothes smelling like you have been around a campfire but that was the only negative all else was great and the reason for the 4 stars and not 5…..

The owner is very nice and speaks fluent English ( I believe he has family in the U.S.). We arrived at 6 pm (make reservations since it is so small) and were promptly seated. It worked out great because the Owner basically gave us a private 2 table area (nice for our 2 yo). We ordered the special which was 3500 Yen per person that includes seafood, beef and pork, chicken and vegetables along with a rice dish and desert. Yes, it is expensive but welcome to Japan and Kyoto……Basically how it works is he brings out a salad to begin and than from there different meats and vegetables which are cooked on a burner in front of your table. Depending how busy it is you may cook it yourself ( which we did). It was fun cooking our own meats and vegetables. The sauces and meats-vegetable were good and fresh. The dinner turned out to be 2 hours long so don't come here planning on a short-quick dinner. This is definitely a place to bring family etc who like to be entertained. This will be your evening……I would come back. Cheers.

“Delightful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

Made this a destination based on its ranking - an glad i did. Intimate, friendly to a solo English speaker and delicious and artfully prepared. Excellent ingredients, prepared simply. Sometimes that is all that is required.

“Good food and humble chef”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

This place is really popular. The food is very good and the chef's course is the way to go here as it includes wagyu beef (other courses only include chicken and veges). Request to sit at the chef's counter if you can. Chef Ken spent 16 years in the States and obviously speaks fluent English so there is no lost in translation issue here. Great atmosphere and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
