I visited Genkoan in November 2016. It was allowed to take photos everywhere in the temple, including photos of the famous windows. Personnel working there are treating visitors kindly. On Nov.17th there were still no red leafs inside the round window view and I was recommended to visit few days later if I want to see red leafs' view as it shows on their postcards:)
To see the celling with samurais' blood from the year 1600 was even more impressing..
We came here early in the morning, not long after opening time, and the temple was completely empty. It felt like it rarely gets busy, so if you're looking for something away from the crowds, then this is it.
The square and circle windows are nice to sit and look out of for a little while, and the bloody footprints on the ceiling (the main reason I went to be honest), were interesting and somewhat unsettling. There was no mention of no photography, but I felt like I shouldn't anyway.
There isn't much else around the area other than a couple of other temples you may like to visit. From there we chose to walk downhill for 30 mins to Kinkakuji, which was pleasant.
the round and square windows are awesome, but vistors are not allowed to take any photo. heard that commercial photographers (taking pictures for a megazine etc) are allowed. if that's true, isn't it a bit of snobbish?
You will see pictures all over Kyoto of the iconic round window of Genkoan, a small temple in the northern hills of the city. But you won't be allowed to take any of your own. It's good to know that before you arrive, since we found it a shock - it is never mentioned in any of the guidebooks. It was a pity, since we arrived for prime autumn color. Still, it is a handsome, gracious little temple and worth experiencing. Get there at opening time in peak season - it is a madhouse by mid-morning.
