Vegetarian food isnt easy to come by in Japan so we were very happy to find Mikoan. We ordered two vegetarian sets which were 1000yen each but each set was different and we were told to share. The food was cooked in front of us and was delicious.

The setting is unusual. You enter through a small alleyway and enter a normal looking house. On the otherside of the door the room was crammed with books, trinkets, musical instruments and posters on the ceiling. Forties music was playing in the background. You sit at a bar and order and the other guests were very friendly. The owner has a very cute cat which is shy but gorgeous and will let you stroke her.

Although it is tucked away we followed the directions writen in a previous review and found it easily. There is a handwritten sign that says vegetarian bar at the entrance to the alleyway.

Highly recommended even if you are not vegetarian.

My husband and I went to have dinner at Mikoan. for 1000 yen you can't go wrong. She gave us each a different set so we got to try 10 different dishes, plus miso soup and a generous bowl of brown rice. Everything was delicious! There was a fake fried chicken that was just exceptional. I can't wait to go to Kyoto again and eat there again. The best way to find the place is to cross Shijo at the Teramachi shopping arcade. There will be a Daimaru annex on your right. You will pass a Family mart and a bookstore and the restaurant will be down an alley on the right. There is a sign that says "Vegetarian Bar".

I've eaten at this tiny hole-in-the-wall with funky peace-poster and cat decoration several times. The food is prepared to order, served perfectly cooked, and is always fascinating. (Don't go if untidiness disturbs you!) You sit at the counter, she cooks right in front of your eyes, and hands the tray to go as soon as it's ready. An experience worth having.

This place is really quite hard to find. Had to ask a nearby shop keeper who didn't speak a word of English. He was really nice & walked us to the small alley that led to the restaurant.
Once inside, we felt like we were inside someone's house. It had a cluttered home feel with seating for about 10 at the counter area. The house cat was seen walking leisurely around us during our meal.
The dinner set (1000yen) the 3 of us ordered was all cooked by the lady chef in front of our eyes. And we all had different selection of food! The chef just said "Share" when she served us our meal.
Great Vegetarian meal!
Definitely great value for money!
