“hard to describe how perfect this hotel is”

This is a tiny little hotel on a side street in the middle of the city. The rooms are individually decorated and they are all extremely tasteful. But what makes the place really special is the host. She made us feel like we were guests at a really good friends house. She made all our dinner reservations for us before we arrived (we picked the restaurants so getting a commission was not her motivation). My husband really wanted to visit a tea farm in Uji and had made arrangements with a local tea grower. Our host, spent more than 45 minutes making sure that the person will pick us up, got her contact information just in case, printed out train times etc... The first night, we decided to walk back from dinner so we were quite late to be back (we had dinner at a temple way out of center of the town). When we arrived back at the hotel, we saw the receptionist made a phone call. The next morning we were not surprised to hear that our host wanted to make sure we came back to the hotel safely.
All the recommendations she had for us in terms of which temples to visit etc, were spot on. We ended up skipping a lot of touristy places with tons of kids and tourists and ended up going to zen gardens in the middle of neighbourhoods, with very few people around- much more zen-like than all the crowds and noise.
and the breakfast and the afternoon tea/cookies were to die for! I will not stay at any other place in Kyoto- its a tad expensive but totally worth it. I was so happy with the whole experience that I gave her a big hug when leaving the hotel although I know its not in asian culture... My Mediterranean roots gave no other way of responding to this much hospitality and grace...

even if i try i forget to write reviews every time i wanted to as soon as i am home. but i just have to write how fantastic this place was.

the place is a small boutique hotel located on a quiet street standing along a small river in kyotos gion district.
the first impression was awesome especially because hisako, the owner, explained the location of the hotel all sightseeings in very good way. she also offered us a room upgrade at the time of our arrival.
the property is very new and everything is really well kept. the rooms are all different but they all come with a modern japanese charme and all the ameneties you can expect from such a small hotel.
you can have breakfast from early in the morning until 12pm. we really enjoyed that especially because in most traditional hotels breakfast is served only really early. the breakfast consits of different kind of fresh breads every day as well as yoghurt, jams, eggs and other delicious things.
the location was perfect for us. almost everything is in walking distance. from the temples and museums to good restaurants in the gion area as well as to the city center with all the shopping possibilities.
but beside of the comfort this place offers the best thing about it is the staff. they are ALL lovely persons and willing to help you with anything. their advices made our stay really memorable and they where from a quality i never experienced from concierge services even in the best 5* hotels. literally every restaurant advice was perfect and this comes because they really know the good places and only recommend places they know personally.
if you stay in kyoto i would really recommend this hotel.

This was our third visit to Kyoto; we stayed five days. Our selection of Hotel Mume was based on our desire for something close to a traditional Japanese Inn but without having to get up off the floor on arising (a little more difficult as we've gotten older). The Mume is perfect, as they use very comfortable platform beds. We stayed in the Flower Suite, which is spacious and nicely appointed, including a rather spectacular bathroom. Pricey, but well worth it. However, what really sets the Mume apart is the owner, the young Ms. Shibata, and her staff. From our initial e-mail contacts through our final departure, Hisako was gracious in every way, going out of her way to recommend sightseeing, jogging paths, and restaurants. Street addresses in Japan are not intuitive, so one day she even walked us several blocks to a small very modest luncheon cafe - one we would never have found (or ventured into). It was a fine meal. Following our stay in Kyoto, we were on our way to catch a cruise ship in Kobe, and Hisako carefully researched all the possibilities and made the arrangements for getting us there. Her attitude and standards are repeated by the excellent staff. Breakfast, and the evening happy hour, were quite pleasant, and gave us and other guests an opportunity to visit with Hisako. The hotel, on a side street, is newly constructed, four stories tall and only about 20 feet wide where it fits into this nice neighborhood backing onto a canal. The hotel has been open for less than two years, and the plan that has implemented - fine accommodations, impeccable service, and gracious friendliness and respect - is deservedly successful. Hisako confided that it was rather unnerving when she first opened and hardly any guests appeared for several weeks. Positive reviews surely make a big difference.

We just spent a delightful three nights at Hotel Mume. From the warm welcome we received on arrival, to the helpful recommendations, and the personal attention the owner Hisako and her entire staff provide, it’s a hotel we highly recommend.

Briefly, this small, boutique hotel is located in the Gion neighbourhood of Kyoto – walking distance to most sights and entertainment. With only seven rooms, and recently built, the hotel is in impeccable shape. We stayed in the “Moon” room which is relatively small, but tastefully decorated, a very comfortable bed, and with a first-rate washroom. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

The breakfast served was exceptional – everything was fresh - juice, fruit cup, pastries, soups, etc. It was a pleasure to linger over this meal. Every afternoon between 5:00 – 7:00pm, Hisako hosts a happy hour where beverages and a tasty selection of unique snacks are supplied. The room overlooks a small canal at the back, and thus it’s a serene place to enjoy a beer and a book for some quiet time prior to dinner.

A wonderful place to use as your base to explore Kyoto.

After seeing the reviews on this site I decided to stay here. I could only get a room for one night, but boy am I glad I did. Hisako (the owner) is extremely gracious, as are all her staff. The place and location are wonderful, the decor stunning and hospitality better than I have experienced any other hotel. Period. Breakfast is great, happy hours are a lovely touch, very clean and new hotel. the only slightly negative comment I have (just to make it real!) is that I stayed in the moon room (you can see the rooms on the hotel website) and it was a bit dark. It was difficult to root around in my suitcase., The room with its dark walls and one window could use another light. Fortunately I was able to use the emergency flashlight in the closet to find my glasses when I dropped them! I am looking forward to staying there again and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

My wife were very pleased with the location, it is tucked back on a sidestreet in a very central nightlife area. We were within walking distance of most everything we wanted to do.

The rooms were really great, the breakfast was outstanding, but what really set the hotel apart is the ownership and staff. Everyone there seems to enjoy what they do and take pleasure in helping you to see the best side of their home.

I have already recomended this outstanding lodging to several friends and I will recomend it to you now...don't miss it!

We came here on our honeymoon and can honestly report it was above and beyond the highlight of our trip. The service is beyond outstanding. We have stayed in many 5 (and 6!) star hotels in over 50 countries and this blew everything away. There is no better place to stay in Kyoto, Japan, or anywhere else! Yoshie not only made all our dinner reservations for us (our Japanese is abysmal), but one night she even walked us to our restaurant and ordered for us as the owners didn't speak English! Mume offered a full breakfast every morning that was absolutely delicious, and a happy hour (that lasted two) in the afternoons with my husband's favorite scotch on hand. We arrived to a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers and a bottle of complimentary champagne for our honeymoon. When the owner found out my husband loved Keith Jarrett, we found a Keith Jarrett CD in our room the next time we entered it. The location was perfect for us: right in the center of Gion on a quiet, art-lined street...we saw more geishas scurrying to and from than we ever could have hoped for. Our room was gorgeous, with stunning design, and was so high-end that the toilet seat lifted when you neared the commode so you didn't have to touch it. We were in heaven for our 5 night stay and didn't want to leave.
We can't wait to go back! thank you so much for such an incredible experience. My husband and I are truly humbled by the grace, warmth and hospitality shown to us at Hotel Mume.
We can't recommend it highly enough.
