Don't look at any other hotel, this is "the hotel" in Kyoto to choose.

Due to our work, we have been to many B&B and hotels, and we can ensure that it is difficult to find these little gems.

HIGHS:

- Best location in town, in Gion.
- Exquisite design to every single detail you can imagine.
- Delicious breakfast.
- Excellent cleanliness.
- Silence, no noise at all in the rooms at night
- And the most important thing, the extremely warm service Hisako-san, the owner, and her staff offer their guests. They really want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Absolutely warm and helpful.

LOWS:
- there are no lows, really.

Hisako-san, owner of Mume Hotel, you deserve to be number one.

There is not much to add to all the great things other reviewers have said about Mume except that they are absolutely true. This really is a little gem of a hotel. It's a charming place, conveniently located on a quiet side street close to bus and subway and two regional rail lines, and within walking distance of the Gion geisha district, Pontocho restaurants, and many of the Higashiyama temples and shrines.

At the time of our booking, we felt a little adventurous since there were only two, albeit very positive, reviews on TripAdvisor, and none anywhere else. We are habitual B&B users and do not like "luxury" hotels, but Mume did not sound like either. In fact, our experience exceeded our best expectation, as Mume actually combines the best of both worlds, the real luxury of expensive hotels (and expensive they are in Kyoto!) and intimacy and personal atmosphere of a B&B. We stayed in the Butterfly Room on the 4th floor (yes, there is an elevator) for one flawless week. Hisako and her staff were incredibly attentive to our needs and helpful as we made our touring and dining plans each day or needed assistance with reservations, etc., requiring communication in Japanese. They do not simply provide an impeccable service, they actually care that your stay at their hotel and Kyoto in general is a very happy one.

Oh yes, the breakfast breads, a previous reviewer mentioned that they were different each day of their four-day stay. We had eight breakfasts and the breads were still different every day. Please, somebody, let us know if/when they actually start to repeat. And to clarify, the deck access and a laptop computer are provided only in Flower suite, but free Internet access is indeed available throughout the hotel.

By the way, as of this writing for some reason TripAdvisor's map location for Mume is incorrect. If they still have not corrected it and show it in the Gosho on Oike dori south of the Imperial Palace, note that the actual location is about a kilometer to the southeast across the Kamo River, at the north of the Gion district. Google Maps does place it properly on Shinmonzen just west of Higashioji dori.

I really had an absolutely wonderful 4-day stay with my partner in this fantastic boutique hotel, lovingly furnished with beautiful antique pieces from all over the world. The staff are especially gracious. You almost want to beg them to stop being so nice. During our stay, we stayed at the Butterly room and the moon room, but were very nice and clean, although the Butterfly room has more light. Breakfast is fabulous and is taken in the sun room, which is lovely bright room, which faces a quiet street right next to the river. It is in a very good location - right in the Gion district, about 10 minute walk to the Geisha houses. The hotel is also in very easy access to the trains, underground train lines, and to direct buses that connects to the temple areas and other parts of town. It is also close to the night life, many fabulous restaurants and shopping areas. The hotel is quite romantic and would make a lovely getaway for Valentines - I am already planning my next trip :)
The best part of my stay? The bathrooms are very clean. There's free internet!!! I also really loved the yummy bread served for breakfast - which were never the same - among a few was the fig bread, bean bread, olive, nutty bread, yummy pastry...and the owner is cuter than a button, she's really lovely.

"An Incredible Kyoto Experience" was had at Hotel Mume last month. Four of our nine day Japan vacation was spent in Kyoto at the petite, very hip Hotel Mume. Owner Hisako Shibato welcomed us to tea immediately after our arrival. Friendly, informed staff serve fine teas and coffees in a very beautiful dining room overlooking a canal in the Gion district. Nestled among antique shops on a narrow street, our suite on the top floor combined antique artifacts, a platform bed on tatami mats, and the coolest euro bathroom you could find anywhere. The deck provides views of the Kyoto area mountains. Incredible breakfasts, wireless and laptop provided, A jewel of a hotel in any city, Mume is minutes away from all of the mystery, antiquity, and beauty old Kyoto has to offer. We met new friends at Hotel Mume, including the staff and owner. Our location afforded access to cool out of the way restaurants and shopping. We had the chance to view multiple rooms. All were very tasteful, Asian antiques, and modern sensibility. Brand new 10 months ago. Should be written up by Conde Nast, Wallpaper, and Monocle. Its that nice.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Mume Hotel. The place is small, cozy, very well decorated and very well located. Good breakfast in front a little river and a sakura tree. The staff is incredibly helpful giving you all the information you need (and in very good English!). Free Drinks from 5pm to 7pm. I highly recommend this place.

We stayed there with a friend for a couple of days.
The place is very well designed , very well located, very comfortable, and to top it off the service was close to perfection. Upon booking , the staff was very efficient and timely in regards to email communications. Upon arrival, the staff welcomed us warmly and took excellent care of us- providing us with all the service and information needed ( including making excellent temple and restaurant recommendations) Breakfast was delicious.
If one wants to stay in a boutique hotel instead of a traditional Ryokan in Kyoto , this is the perfect place to go. !!

We were staying two nights at the hidden gem Mume in Kyoto, based on the impressive reviews given already at TripAdvisor and the appealing personal hotel site on the internet. Indeed, we could share all the good experiences of the other guests:

- Rooms: There are only 7 rooms; still, there are 4 different design types giving the accomodation a very special experience. We were accomodated in the Butterfly room, after we had booked the Moon room - the upgrade was given to us without any further costs, which was the first highlight already before having entered our room. Stepping into it, we were highly impressed by the elegant interior: every single item seems to have its place, and the red/black color combination is applied consistently. Moreover to be mentioned, the toilet is highly equipped with all the features you can wish for...

- Service: Hisako and her staff are just the most friendly and caring hosts you can wish for. They ask you every day about your sightseeing plans and give some further recommendations to it, printing out maps and pictures and are more than happy to take care of the restaurant reservations for the evening. Please follow their advices, the dining places we went were really great! Whenever you need anything additionally (i.e. plugin adaptor, internet cable, umbrella etc.) they make it possible.

- Food: The breakfast they serve is all the same every day, but always a terrrific start in the morning. So far, I have never seen any other cappuccino with as much foam as here - just too good to only order one of them (and you can be sure the staff will ask you for second one right after you have enjoyed the first one...). After 5pm, they start with the Happy Hour serving you drinks and snacks for free. And you are tempted to order the hot drinks just because of the small cookies going along with...

Maybe you think the price might be exaggerated, but you can be sure - it's not. You really get good value for the money - You won't be disappointed!
