We just got back from staying 3 nts at Hotel Mume in August. I can only echo all the rave reviews that Mume gets from Trip Advisor. We were a group of 5 (adults & teenagers), travelling in the heat & humidity of August. It was a delight to come back to Mume after a hot day of sightseeing (tough I know) and be welcomed with an invitation to relax in the salon with whatever beverage we liked. The level of graciousness and service was amazing and made us feel totally at home. Then, as if they read our minds, beautiful little snacks and homemade cookies would appear - heaven! I cannot thank enough, Miyoumi and the rest of the Mume staff for their thoughtfulness & attention to detail. They make everyone feel at home and special. This attentiveness makes one feel at ease and relaxed, which is the point of a vacation isn't it?

Loved many of the things others mention here – the cozy/charming and yet modern rooms, the location in Gion, the breakfast, the happy hour for drinks, fresh flowers beautifully arranged in the common areas every day…

The service level is what distinguishes the Mume but I feel previous conversations about this here or elsewhere were incomplete. Yes the service level is off the charts but at first, I wasn’t too sure about this. We are independent travellers, pretty self-sufficient, and at first it all felt like too much: the staff are all super nice but beyond friendly, walking with you to the elevator, waiting for you when your elevator arrives, asking (politely but determinedly) about how you are, and how was your day today, and what are you doing tomorrow.

But one minor episode aside, they are all so nice, and their hearts are in the right place, and it works. The insistence on providing advice/assistance is actually a very good thing here – Kyoto is unusually confusing, even for Japan, and the staff really helped us plan our day better, and avoid mistakes. Example – not every Keihan train stops at Fushimi Inari, but despite having read extensively about that destination, it was only the Mume staff who highlighted this to us. (The minor episode - when I asked for directions to the drugstore, I got a series of persistent inquiries about whether everything was OK, and could they help, which was overkill – I really didn’t feel like discussing why I am going to the drugstore.)

So come, but be warned – this is much more like a high end B&B than a hotel, and you have to get into that headspace to really enjoy the Mume.

Tip: we had a minor earthquake while we were there (while it’s in the heart of Gion, the Mume looks like it was recently built, and certainly seemed fine in our little tremor). Anyone should really thumb through the first few pages of this before coming to Japan

We spent 4 nights at Hotel Mume and wished we could have stayed longer. Loved it!
Everything about the hotel is wonderful - decor, service, location. The room we stayed in, the Butterfly, was lovely with great beds, free wifi, and all the necessities we needed. The breakfast each morning with an assortment of fruit, breads, soup, etc., was delicious as was the afternoon/happy hour snacks. But the most special thing about Hotel Mume is the staff and service. We felt like were part of a family and anything we asked for or help we needed was provided for us. And the other guests that were there at the same time as us, felt the same way. We would talk in the living room and share how we each found Hotel Mume on TripAdvisor and were so happy with our choice. When you read through the glowing reviews, it may seem hard to believe this hotel is that special, but it really is. There is so much to see and do in Kyoto and coming back to Hotel Mume at the end of day or starting off from Hotel Mume to begin a busy day is the way to travel. Book your Japan trip around room availability at Hotel Mume and you will be so glad you did.

It is hard to put into words how wonderful the experience of staying at Hotel Mume we have stayed all over the world in many types of accommodation and found this lovely small hotel to be the very best in so many ways and highly recommend it to those who like the idea of a level of service that surpassed all expectations. Our time in Kyoto was enhanced by the knowledgable help from the Mume team, with restaurant recommendations for 'cheap and cheerful' local eateries and the very best maps and hints to make the best of our time in this beautiful city. We will definitely return and recommend this hotel to those who like individual, friendly ,helpful ,personal assistance.

The wonderfully positive reviews for this enchanting hotel say it all. The location is ideal, the hotel is beautifully presented and the staff members could not be more helpful. The manager, Hisako, is a tiny dynamo who ensures everything runs perfectly. The antiques, room decorations, flowers and ambiance are all designed to make guests feel very special.

Happy hour (which actually seems to be any time of day) is a chance to rest, relax and chat with other guests and staff. We found that each and every request for advice about places to visit, walks, directions, restaurant recommendations etc was met immediately with enthusiasm, appropriate printouts of information, along with valuable suggestions to 'personalise' our activities and make the most of our limited time in this extraordinary city.

Our party of two couples stayed in the Wind and Moon rooms which were quite different (as their names suggest), but both lovely. Breakfasts were healthy and plentiful, showcasing new ingredients each day (not something you say about most hotels). Particular care is taken to provide seasonal, fresh fruits and home made conserves. The fresh pastries are also delicious.

We all agreed that Hotel Mume was a hugely contributing factor to our enjoyment of Kyoto. Thank you Hisako and staff for making our four days in Kyoto so happy and memorable.

When I come to Kyoto, I like to stay in boutique hotels, as it feels so much more in tune with the nature of the city, and Hotel Mume was one of the hotels I'd been wanting to stay at. I usually base myself near Kyoto station at the excellent Hotel Kanra Kyoto, but thought I'd change it up a bit this time and stay in Gion.

Hotel Mume is located on the charming antique street (Shinmonzen Dori) in the Gion area, and backs onto a lovely stream. The taxi drivers aren't very familiar with the spot, but Mume provides you with a map at the time of booking, and our cab driver was lovely enough to contact the hotel for directions.

Mume is delightful. I loved the look and feel of it. The beautiful antique furniture, the Christofle key rings with tassels, the rooms... We stayed in two separate rooms - Wind and Moon. Wind was the bigger one with views of the stream, and I must confess I liked the light, bright airiness of it better. Moon was smaller with darker tones. It was still cosy and comfortable and I can't fault it at all, but we both like having a bit of space to stretch out.

We missed out on Happy Hour at Mume each time, but breakfast was good. We were in Japan for a while, and having warm, freshly baked and delicious pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt, fruit juice and a healthy, nourishing vegetable soup for breakfast was a nice change. I very much looked forward to breakfast here!

The staff were very attentive and helpful, suggesting and booking restaurants and activities for us during our time there. We are quite private people, so we did find the staff erring a little on the side of being over-friendly. But that is just our personality and we preferred a bit more privacy and space (you have to leave your key at the front desk each time you leave the hotel, so there is no way of getting in and out in private).

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

We spent 5 nights here and couldn't have been more delighted with the hotel. As a family of 5 we had the top floor to ourselves in the stunning Flower room and the Butterfly room ( everything you could want is in the rooms along with the high tech loos!)
Some of the previous reviews mention that the attentive service and helpfulness of the staff can be overbearing. I have to totally disagree with the overbearing comments - from our first emails enquiring about the hotel to our departure I felt they went over and beyond any expectations we had. They will help you plan your itinerary, work out the best way to travel, book trains, print out information on anything you want, food recommendations, temples to see that are maybe aren't listed in guide books. All of this was a huge help and we were delighted that they took such an interest in our trip. Other hotels should take note and raise their game!
Boutique hotels sometimes run the risk of not being child/teenager friendly but absolutely not the case here. Again, friendliness with the balance of good humour and fun was perfect.
Hotel Mume is the perfect location for exploring the Gion quarter as so much of it is within walking distance - lots of little streets with restaurants and tea shops. If you need to go to Kyoto train station it is 10 mins in a taxi - the station itself is a spectacle too, worth a visit.
Breakfast is delicious. Baskets of home made breads and pastries, fresh fruit, soup, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
There's a reason this hotel is the number one in the tripadvisor reviews so my advice is just book it and don't bother looking anywhere else. We loved our stay here...
