We spent 5 nights here and couldn't have been more delighted with the hotel. As a family of 5 we had the top floor to ourselves in the stunning Flower room and the Butterfly room ( everything you could want is in the rooms along with the high tech loos!)
Some of the previous reviews mention that the attentive service and helpfulness of the staff can be overbearing. I have to totally disagree with the overbearing comments - from our first emails enquiring about the hotel to our departure I felt they went over and beyond any expectations we had. They will help you plan your itinerary, work out the best way to travel, book trains, print out information on anything you want, food recommendations, temples to see that are maybe aren't listed in guide books. All of this was a huge help and we were delighted that they took such an interest in our trip. Other hotels should take note and raise their game!
Boutique hotels sometimes run the risk of not being child/teenager friendly but absolutely not the case here. Again, friendliness with the balance of good humour and fun was perfect.
Hotel Mume is the perfect location for exploring the Gion quarter as so much of it is within walking distance - lots of little streets with restaurants and tea shops. If you need to go to Kyoto train station it is 10 mins in a taxi - the station itself is a spectacle too, worth a visit.
Breakfast is delicious. Baskets of home made breads and pastries, fresh fruit, soup, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
There's a reason this hotel is the number one in the tripadvisor reviews so my advice is just book it and don't bother looking anywhere else. We loved our stay here...

Looking at my TimeHop application today and noticed I was at Hotel Mume exactly one year ago.

The rooms were excellent the beds were comfortable but what made this place great was the people who work here. Service was exceptional.

If I would to go back again, I would want to make a stop at Kyoto just to stay at Hotel Mume and eat some Kobe beef down the road at Mikaku.

Loved it!

A wonderful boutique hotel! Super small and the service was phenomenal. Every room has a different theme. We stayed in the “Wind” room and it was quite lovely. Their location is wonderful. We were walking distance to wonderful temples, dining and shopping. The breakfast is also wonderful; they even bake fresh pastries just for you. We seriously did not want to leave the hotel. We cannot wait to plan another trip to go back.

This small boutique hotel is located in the best part of Kyoto (Gion) in my opinion for overseas guests. The service prior to arrival was second to none...helping & advising with transport/transfers/restaurants/sightseeing etc etc. Perhaps found the service once we arrived a little over the top but hey, shouldn't complain about that.
We had the smallest room which I found a little dark (no natural light as we were in the middle of the building) & a little cramped but with everything that we needed.
The breakfast area could only accommodate a limited number of guests so had to have a set time each day...heard other guests being told that they would have to leave (politely) as other b'fast guests were due. A bit odd as there is actually room to accommodate more tables. Breakfasts were good however. Happy hour each day is wonderful...drinks & nibbles although I didn't find this communal area very comfortable but it was in keeping with the hotel/building.
They advertise a laundry service but when we needed some clothes washed they said that wasn't possible on a Sunday.
I really liked this hotel but not quite 5 star & very hard to compare with other hotels as it is very unique. Would I stay there again & would I recommend to others....yes.

Room Tip: Book early as it books up quickly.

A wonderful hotel on all fronts. The owner designed and decorated the hotel with a combination of Asian antiques with modern touches. The rooms are very romantic and have very nice touches in them. Of course the most modern Todo toilets, latest edition which are all automatic with sensing technology. The locations is excellent being in the old "Gion" district in the middle of "Geisha" territory and near a tremendous amount of restaurants and temples/shrines. The best part is the staff. The owner is absolutely wonderful, cheerful and extremely helpful. The staff is over the top helpful and dint miss the Happy Hour at least one night and the breakfast is outstanding (and included in the price). All in all a very good find and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Moon Room however all are good.

This is a tough review to write due to Tripadvisor's rating system. There needs to be a separate category for boutique hotels. Although Hotel Mume is top class for a boutique hotel, it lacks a number of things that it needs to be a five star property under any circumstances. For example, it has no pool or spa... it has no restaurant. And, after staying at the Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo, there is no way to fairly compare the rooms. This is one of these hotels on Tripadvisor that has a huge following and is an awesome hotel, but in no way is a five star property. It is important to understand that before reserving a room here.

On the flip side, the location, service, and hospitality are top notch. The design of the hotel is terrific and well thought out. We of course did not stay in any other property in Kyoto. There may not be a better hotel in Kyoto.

The pros and cons

Pros:

1. Service and Hospitality- Every single staff member at Mume was awesome and very helpful. They gave us two great restaurant recommendations, which were exactly what we were looking for. If we needed anything, we got it promptly. At times, the service felt a little over the top it was so attentive.
2. Location- Mume is on a smaller street in Gion. The street is full of art galleries and antique stores. It is worth checking out these shops when open. We found some great prints at the gallery across the street. We could walk to many of the shrine and temples in the area without a problem. There were many awesome restaurants in the area. The train and subway stations were a 10 minute walk. One thing to note... Gion is still a functioning Red Light District in spite of what anyone says. The scene in Gion around 6:00pm to 8:00pm is not to be missed. This might be some of the best people watching in the world with one huge upside... you never feel as if you are in danger. It is almost like being in the Disneyland of Red Light Districts.... I guess it is seedy given the nature of what it is, but it doesn't feel seedy because the violence feels to be out of the equation. Having said that, after reading a number of books on the sex trade in Asia, I am not sure this area is any better or worse than others we have seen in terms of the human cost that comes with the territory.
3. Nice property design and layout- The hotel has a very relaxed feel. The rooms as well appointed and laid out. The hotel really feels like a home away from home.

Cons:
1. Rooms are missing a few things to be at the highest level- Although the rooms are very nice, they are missing a few touches. For example, our room had two double beds put together instead of a king bed. The TV was maybe 20 inches so it was hard to watch the World Cup! I know, I know- I am nitpicking. The room didn't have any lotion which bothered my wife. The bathtub was quite small. These kind of things, while by themselves are not a big deal do not make for a 5 star experience.
2. Breakfast- You had to set a time for breakfast everyday which was ok... The food was basically the same every day except for a changing soup. The food was terrific, but not awesome four days in a row. Plus, the only protein offered with the meal was a hard boiled egg. More proteins needed! It is hard for us to start a long day of walking without much protein! The service at breakfast was terrific.
3. Lack of physical amenities- There is no pool, spa, or full time restaurant. It would have been nice if the hotel had a restaurant. We would have eaten at the restaurant at least a few times after a long day.

I really like this hotel on many levels, but I just cannot bring myself to rate it 5 stars. I want to rate it 5 stars, but it just does not fit the bill. Kyoto is awesome and this is a lovely boutique hotel in the perfect location.

There are a lot of raves here for Mume and we know why - it's in a great spot in Gion, lots of good spots in walking distance.

The staff really were fantastic, happy hour is a great thing - most amazing array of vegetable chips ever, drinks, tea and biscuits any time.

We had the biggest room, sakura or Flower, as we booked very late and we got lucky - it wasn't cheap but it was great, very big, outdoor balcony, large bathroom, separate bed and lounge area. You could still have a beautiful stay in a smaller room.

Breakfast was lovely, nice fresh breads and fruit, soup too because it's Japan after all! We always tried it and it was lovely, just not used to soup in the morning!

Hasuko and her team were so generous, they were gracious when friends of ours wanted to join us for a drink, minded or luggage when we left late and drew a terrific walking trail in the map to get to the Philosopher's walk... it was really beautiful and we're so glad we followed the instructions.

We would happily recommend Mume to anyone wanting to stay in a beautiful place in a beautiful city.
