Stayed here for two nights, and this had to be one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. We booked the Flower Room and was absolutely immaculate and incredibly comfortable. All amenities (TV, DVD player, air-conditioning, rainfall shower, huge victorian style bath, SELF opening toilet etc) were of a 5 star hotel standard, and the dining room/bar downstairs is a wonderful area to relax after a day of exploring Kyoto's temples. We always made it a priority to get back in time for the happy hour complimentary drinks from 5pm - 7pm.

From beginning to end the staff do their absolute best to make you feel welcome and comfortable. We had a few queries about how best to arrange visits to the Ginkakuji and Kingakuji temples and the staff provided a list of available options and routes to take. Furthermore the staff helped us book a kaiseki lunch at Roan Kikunoi as soon as we arrived and provided a comprehensive list of dining options in the area. I have to say that there was not one single fault in the service; the staff were all incredibly well trained and made the stay incredibly enjoyable and relaxing.

We stayed at Hotel Mume for one night, in the Wind room. The service staff were very helpful in answering our queries and helping us to secure meal reservations. The level of service was exceptional. However I have to admit that I was expecting a higher level of comfort from such a highly rated establishment. I was hoping for more plush, relaxing, soft surroundings, but the hotel seemed to be full of hard, uncomfortable pieces of furniture. Would not re-visit as the hotel does not suit my requirements.

If you've spent any time in Japan, you're already aware of their incredible hospitality. After a few weeks in the country, you forget how exceptional it really is. Mume is exceptional even in a country that excels in hospitality. The location is perfect for exploring Gion and many of the famous shrines and temples without having to take public transportation. It retains the feel of old world Kyoto with all the convenient amenities, but the real stand out is the staff at Mume. If you give them an idea of what you want to see or what kind of food you want to eat, they make detailed recommendations that will save you a ton of time, and somewhat avoid the crowds. The breakfasts were delicious! I wish I could have all the soup recipes, and it was so relaxing to enjoy happy hour in their beautiful lounge after a long day in Kyoto. Thank you so much for a fabulous visit. We will be back!

Reading over the earlier reviews of this hotel, I realize I have little to add to their raves. Five nights at Mume was not nearly enough. As a guest there your every desire is seen to, from reservations at temples before your arrival to researching obscure goods you want to purchase, nothing is too much to ask. Although sometimes the staff's deference is hard to accept, you can't doubt that their friendliness and kindness is sincere and they want you to have the best experience you can. From the delicious, multi-course breakfast to happy hour, you are well taken care of. They inquired about our choices for dining and never failed to find us wonderful places with quite good food. I can't wait to go back to Mume!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the canal at the rear of the hotel, if available.

Mume is a real gem - only 7 rooms and the service is excellent (sometimes even a little over the top). My wife needed to see a doctor and they were superb in taking her to a local doctor and then to a pharmacy.
Rooms are beautifully furnished but, as some other reviewers have mentioned, they are too dark. There is no in-house dining (other than breakfast) but there are plenty of nearby restaurants.
We thoroughly recommend Mume as a great place for a few days in Kyoto

In May 2014 we stayed in the Butterfly room for 5 nights. Nice size room with an ultra modern bathroom. The toilet was smarter than me and knew when I came into (light turned on) and left (flushed) the separate commode portion. This boutique hotel was beautiful.
However, the service was outstanding and probably the best we have ever had. Hisako, the owner, and her staff treated us like close friends who were guests in her home. Not only did they recommend and make reservations at restaurants, they also called and discussed our preferences and gave us color printouts of the outside so we recognized the place.
After 5 nights we left for Kyosan, a mountain village, 5 hours away by numerous trains. Even though our 2 bags were on wheels, Hisako suggested we ship one them ahead to Tokyo (which she paid for despite our protests!!!). Not until we started transferring trains, up and down steps in stations and stowing the bag did we realize how helpful that was.
I recommend the Hotel Mume.

This was an experience in itself! There we were in Kyoto and it was the hotel we were raving about! This is a most wonderful place to stay where the staff really do anticipate your future needs. The staff are warm, engaging and do everything they can to be of service and assist! We had fabulous restaurant recommendations over five nights. Happy Hour was a joy - Campari sodas with snacks! Breakfast - a delight looking out on to the fast running canal. We had the suite - a beautiful room, balcony, views and a gorgeous bathroom!

It was a joy to stay there!

Room Tip: If your budget stretches that far, the top floor suite is great!
