We stayed at Hotel Mume for 4 nights while in Kyoto. This is a small boutique hotel with 4 types of rooms. We stayed in the " wind" room which was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located near the heart of the Gion district on a street full of artesian stores. It's a little expensive but includes free happy hour and a complete breakfast. It is immaculate! Yoshie, Meyuki and the rest of the staff go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. They print off directions to give cab drivers for each leg of your daily itinerary, make sure taxi drivers have thorough instructions before you get near one, will provide awesome recommendations, and could not be nicer. Service is phenomenal. It's an entire staff of 5- star concierges. Impressive!!!

I think this is one of the nicest places I have stayed in. The staff is exceptionally great. Cannot praise them enough.

Great location
Very comfortable room
Great value
Great service

Well worth coming back to kyoto, if only to stay here again. Hopefully they will continue what the are doing

Most places could learn from their example

My husband and I were at a loss as to where to stay during our 5 night stay in Kyoto and by chance came across the Mume hotel on Tripadvisor. After reading all the amazing reviews we went ahead and booked the butterfly room.
We were not disappointed and we can truly say that everything that had been written was exact so just go for it and book!!!
We just want to say one thing- ALL the staff that make up the Mume are exquisite, kind and really go out of their way. We have travelled to many places and stayed in 5 star hotels but have never experienced this kind of service and hospitality.
Thank you all!!!!
We stayed 23rd to 28th August

Before arriving for our stay at Mume, I corresponded with the hotel staff with regards to a birthday surprise I intended to give my bf. They agreed to help buy the birthday cake, and gave superb suggestion to bring the cake into the room during their happy hour along with red wine! Beautiful & thoughtful setup!

Upon reaching, the hotel staff offered to give us directions and maps as well as recommendations.
The room(Butterfly) is awesome. The staff showed us our room, and explained what was in the room and how to use everything, eg. humidifier, cd player. With the room lighting and the lovely mix of oriental furniture, with the brilliant mix of bold red and black, coupled with the music from the CD player (a range of cds to choose from), sets a lovely, romantic mood in the room.

I was blown away again at breakfast, looking at the food they served. A variety of very nutritional and satisfying breakfast. Tea/ coffee, fruit juice, eggs, yoghurt, fruits, soup and the bread and croissant was absolutely delicious!

Upon checking out, the staff asked where we were going and offered to check our train timing and directions, and even to the extent of calling our next hotel to ask for directions from train stations, printed out, highlighted, very clear and precise directions given.

Thing to note: We knocked on the red door when we got there, but there's a button to the left on the wall, that was hidden behind some plants, that's the buzzer to press.

Definitely on my list when I visit Kyoto again, would love to try the other rooms.
And again I must commend on the friendly hotel staff, impeccable service! I would give them 8 Stars if Tripadvisor allows for it.

during the stay, we kept on saying how amazing this place is because the service is unparalleled. it is a very small hotel and therefore they take care of everything and really seem to enjoy it. there is no complaining or expecting tip. in great location. would stay there again without a doubt. the service is total worth any extra cost you might have to pay and in the country where some visitors might not speak the language, this is key and totally worth it.

We spent four days and three nights at Mume, hands on the best service and personal atenttion we've ever experienced in all our travels so far. The decor, location, cleanliness, breakfast and again personal attention were out of this world. If going to Kyoto it is mandatory to stay at Mume.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon in Japan. Everything from the rooms, to the breakfasts, to the service was thoughtful and excellently executed. We had the Moon room, which while was somewhat absent of natural light since the window faced an alley way, it was still well lit within the room with all the lights on. The room was quite large compared to the typical Japanese hotel room, and beautifully decorated with a wonderful traditional lantern light, with a mix of modern and traditional. The only con was that the beds are separated into two twins with a bare bar of wood (part of the bed frame) in between, which can be tough for couples, but this seemed to be a common theme in most Japanese hotels we stayed at outside of Tokyo.

The breakfasts were delicious, with the sweetest fruit, most flavorful soups, and most chewy breads, and crisp croissants imaginable. A wonderful start to our event filled time in Kyoto.

The staff was extremely friendly, and spoke English extremely well. Don't be afraid to ask them for recommendations of tourist sights, stores, and restaurants. We had some of the best food during our entire honeymoon during our stay in Kyoto thanks to the staff's excellent restaurant recommendations (namely their recommendations for okonomiyaki and tonkotsu).

All in all, it was a wonderful stay, especially since it was so centrally located.
