We had to change our plans last minute, so we were very lucky to get a room at this hotel. It's best to get to this place via taxi from Kyoto station (approx 1700yen) and it may be difficult to spot at night! Our tip is to keep an eye out for a red door! However, it's in the perfect location for visiting the shrines and Gion. The hotel is a little expensive, but worth the service and style!
As mentioned we had to change our plans last minute (we cancelled our week in Tokyo due to recent events); but they were very helpful in finding a place for us to stay in our next destination and even made introductory calls for us!
Breakfast was included; made up of a variety of home-made breads, fruits, yogurt, vegetable soup etc. We even had chance to enjoy their home-made cookies when we stopped to have a drink in the evening!
The rooms were clean and modern. All amenities we could need were available. Also has free wifi. Book the Butterfly room if you want a chance to peek into the bathroom through the glass window!
They took very good care of us and we would definitely visit them again!

Room Tip: Very nice romantic rooms. Book well in advance.

We had 2 rooms, a wind and a moon, and I'm not sure where to start.
From the moment my enquiries commenced to the time we left i felt so welcome and so cared for.
We chose Mume because the small boutique style was us to a t and the relaxed atmosphere was perfect, not to mention it was my birthday.

The rooms:
I preferred our room Karasuuri (sp)(wind) The view over the sakura and river was lovely and the bathroom had the most amazing toilet (no arguments over he who left the seat up!) It was flooded with light and very spacious. The "kids" room was a little darker but beautifully decorated in a definitive Asian style. Kids actually preferred their room because it stayed darker later in the morning and let them sleep in. The beds were also able to be moved apart.

The breakfast:
Its an eclectic Western Japanese mix. Don;t expect the bacon and eggs, hash browns. Do delight in the fresh fruit salad, home made breads with matching jams, yoghurts, soup and fresh fruit salad made with the freshest ingredients.

Happy hour:
Lovely little snacks and drinks and the time to really sort your local restaurant. Our 3 were so lovely and I'm fussy with Japanese Cuisine as this was our 3rd visit so can now pick the difference between Tourist and WOW!
Meals:
Each night we were advised on where to go and given very explicit directions which made it easy to ensure we went to the right place.
Night one was a place in Pontocho, vegetables out the front with a wonderful array of foods, There was another Australian there who lived in kyoto and could not believe we had found such a great place (hidden gem was the comment)
Night 2 was Karyo Kaiseki (and my birthday which was handled superbly by Mume, even a birthday cake and wonderful walks guidebook). Private room well and truly prebooked with the comment from Gd making the highlight...sorry i tried but I can't eat anything with eyes, not even a whole guinea pig! Walking around Gion in the evening is truly a Japanese immersion.

Night 3 was a Shabu Shabu (name escapes me right now), not cheap but beef and lots of fresh veges.

Surprise:
Laundry here was so cheap just be prepared to pay cash

The big disappointment:

I stayed at Mume with my mother and I can honestly say it is the best service I have ever received anywhere in the world. Nothing was too much trouble and all the staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome. Our room (Wind Room) was stunning and had a view of the beautiful cherry blossom trees along the river. Happy Hour (5-7pm every night) was a delight and free drinks/snacks in the wonderful evening atmosphere of Mume was perfect. The staff all have an extensive knowledge of the local area and so could recommend restaurants and places to visit, ensuring we knew the way to go each time.

I have stayed in many places in Japan and this is hands down number one. I wish all hotels in the world were like this!

I stayed at Hotel Mume, because of its number one rating on TripAdviser. This rating is well deserved. I don't imagine that this type of Hospitality can be replicated in Australia. We just don't have the kind of culture that puts the client in such an esteemed position. It is somewhat of a culture shock that staff can be this hospitable. Absolutely nothing is to hard for the staff to help you with.

Where to begin, from the moment we arrived very early until our delayed departure due to the earthquake/tsunami the staff and accommodations are beyond first rate. If you want to experience extreme personal attention (not that fake stuff in large upscale hotels) but true, anticipate your needs, personal attention, the ENTIRE staff at Hotel Mume provide just that. Not to mention the best latte on the planet! From early morning breakfast of fresh fruits and breads to bottom-less glasses during happy hour, the staff is 100% about you. They offer excellent recommendations on things to do, places to eat, and give maps, directions, tips. They want you to enjoy Kyoto. Being located right in the heart of the GION district, you could get lost in all there is to see and do. They understand that and help plan out wonderful days. On a rainy day, they'll provide you with very nice umbrellas. On a pre-dawn departure they arranged for a ride to the airport and provided a sack of fresh baked breads for the ride.

Now for some out of the extraordinary details. We were caught up in the earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan. Our plan to catch the bullet train back to Tokyo, skyliner from Tokyo to Narita then flight out of Narita was expectedly thrown out the window. They did EVERYTHING to help us find our way home. First of all, the secured a room for us in their hotel for the unexpected extra night. Then when the guests that had reserved the beautiful Flowers Suite cancelled (due to flights cancelled), they moved our belongings up to the Suite for our unexpected extended stay. Throughout the day they monitored flight schedules, train departures, crowdedness of trains, bus schedules and rail lines to Narita to keep us up to speed. They were instrumental in helping us get alternative flights out of Osaka to Narita, circumventing the train system all together. This could have been a very stressful period but the staff were there for us every step of the way.

So bottom line, if you want to feel like you are a truly appreciated guest in an incredibly accommodatingly quaint hotel, Hotel Mume should be your ONLY choice. Just Do It!
