“Mume knows what hospitality is”
Reviewed March 15, 2011

There are lots of glowing reviews here...and here comes another one. Mume is perfectly located in an interesting district and just a walk away from anything you wish to see. The rooms are a little small- but are beautiful and have everything you need. However it is the care that Mume's staff take that make the difference.
I have rarely felt as genuinely cared for as I did here. Nothing is too much trouble and recommendations to good eating and cultural spots wer just a conversation away. The free happy hour was also lovely to come back to.
I loved Kyoto and I loved Mume. .

After spending 8 days in Tokyo, Takayama and Shin Hotaka we finished our holiday in Japan in Kyoto with my husband and our 3 teenagers. First of all, what an amazing city Kyoto is, the sightseeing, the restaurants the people in the street make it a very very special interesting city to visit. We just loved it and were very happy to end our holiday here especially in this very elegant hotel. You can't really call it a hotel, it's more a private exclusive intimate place whith only 8 rooms where you ring at a very beautiful red door to get in. As was said before the whole staff is amazingly friendly and helpful doing their maximum to make your stay unforgettable. The hotel is very well situated and you can walk easily to most places. Cabs are also very easy and cheap to get around.
We asked for a suite and a regular room. The suite is very pretty and beautifully decorated with a private covered terrace and an amazing bathroom. We just missed lamps near the bed to be able to read in bed. Our youngest daughter shared the suite with us and had the couch turned into a bed which made it all very comfortable. There was still plenty of room with 4 very comfortable armchairs to watch television or use the portable computer with a free internet put at your disposal. For the second room we were upgraded to the room on the same floor as the suite which meant we had the whole topfloor to ourselves.
The free happy hour every day between 5 and 7pm is a very nice opportunity to prepare the next day visit.
All the restaurants the hotel reserved were just perfect and they also gave us interesting tips for sightseeing to places where not so much tourists go.
Thsi stay was just perfect from the first minute we walked in until the last minute when we stepped in our cabs to leave.
Just beware that this hotel asks for an advance payment upon arrival even before you are shown to your room which makes it a bit akward especially because it's not mentioned in your reservation confirmation. It would have been fine if we had known in advance.
Thank you again for this wonderful stay which we will never forget.

Been in the industry for many years its truly hard to find "those hotels". The hotel that you want to share with friend but also want to keep to yourself. In all the years I have traveled this would be one of the few maybe even the only one that fits into that category.
If you want a hotel that is unique and different without the same old hotel stuff this is the place to go.
I would rate it as one of the finest and best hotels i have stayed, and encourage you to open the red door and let Kyoto look after you.

Hotel Mume is simply an experience to remember. From the moment you walk through the big red door you are greeted by the most friendliest and warmest people you may ever encounter. If visiting Kyoto, Mume is a must-stay.

Hotel Mume is a classy boutique hotel located in the Gion area, and it's very central to major temples/shrines and other attractions. Also close public transport such as buses and train / subway stations. A taxi to Mume from Kyoto Station will set you back roughly 1200 yen, which is reasonable.

The room we were in (Wind room) was beautiful. Very comfortable with two large double beds, a spacious bathroom and a gorgeous view of the stream that runs through the Gion district. Free wireless internet in the room for those of us with laptops too.

Dinner is not available at Mume, however the breakfast is an absolute feast. Fruit, yoghurt, soup, boiled eggs, pastries, coffee, juice...all the food is home made, right down to the jams, and every morning consisted of a different breakfast, such as a different soup, pastry, jam etc.

Hisako-san and the team at Hotel Mume are enough of a reason to stay at there. Never before have I experienced hospitality like what I did at Mume. Even before my trip they had booked my airport shuttle bus for me, even researching my flight times! One day we decided to take a taxi to the station, and one of the girls actually ran down the street fetch a cab. Hisako-san and her fellow hosts go to great lengths to make you feel right at home, and their knowledge of the area is phenomenal. Thanks to our hosts' advice we saw many new sights that are off the tourist trail, had dinner at some amazing restaurants (Mume even made reservations for us and printed maps), and enjoyed our holiday a lot more.

We stayed for four nights, but because we loved the service we spent our last night in Japan back at Mume too. We enjoyed ourselves that much that my partner and I bought our hosts a small gift. Even as we were waiting at the bar for our transport back to the airport we too were handed a gift and a thankyou card off Hisako; we didn't want to leave.

If you want to experience Kyoto to the fullest, stay here to make the most of it. For those of you who don't speak Japanese too well, don't stress. All the staff speak very good English.
We loved it that much that we are returning to Japan for 2012, again staying at Mume.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Mume during weekend excursion down to Kyoto and absolutely loved the hotel. I can't say enough about the experience, from the breakfast to the personalized service, everything was just first class.
The hotel sits right on the edge of Kyoto's entertainment area known as Gion, but is situated down a quiet lane known for it's antique shops (very pricey). It's location makes it easy walking to the shopping and dining areas just across the river.
The hotel and rooms are decorated with antique looking Asian furniture and paintings and are very clean. The room was roomy enough to be very comfortable with a lovely bathroom and high tech heated Japanese Toilet seat with remote control.... really cool. I wanted to bring one home!. We stayed in the Butterfly Room and loved it, but for those who are very tall, big or Obese you should be warned the toilet area will be cramped, though the shower/sink area is large enough. Didn't see the other rooms, so they might be a better fit for the big folks.
Our stay came complete with a morning breakfast they included soup, fruit, yogurt, coffee/Tea and the most amazing home baked bread rolls we've every had. Every morning they had a different selections of rolls and they really put Paris to shame, just heavenly!!! Again, if you insist on a giant American breakfast of steak and eggs, this ain't gonna cut it for you, but if you like a nice, healthy breakfast to start your day you won't find a better spread than at this establishment.
In the evening they had a neat little happy hour with beer and wine that made for a nice chance to meet the hotel staff and owner as well as make you plans for the evening. The staff and owner gave us the absolute best recommendations for both shopping and eating, far exceeding anything in the guidebooks.
Suffice to say we had a wonderful time staying at Hotel Mume and will definitely plan on a return visit, if just for the chance to taste their exquisite home made pastries and breads! Kudos to their impeccable service and friendliness!

Originally booked another 5 star hotel in Kyoto but could not resist to change to Hotel Mume after reading the comments in TripAdvisor…and certainly did not regret by doing so…Once reservation was confirmed, we were given directions to the hotel. The private transfer recommended direct from Kansai Airport turned out to be a convenient and wise choice as we arrived late on the first night. We stayed at the WIND ROOM (Rm #3) which overlooked the stream at the back of the hotel. The décor was as described on the hotel website. Contrary to what others wrote, it got big windows and natural lighting during the day was no problem. The staff showed their eagerness in giving us directions for the spots we were visiting and gave good recommendations for restaurants. We were always greeted warmly everytime we got in and out of the hotel. They even made dinner reservation for us for dinner in Osaka on the night we departed Kyoto. On departure, the staff advised us the most convenient way to Osaka and how to avoid traffic…thanks to them as we saved time and money. Location of the hotel was unbeatable being conveniently located on a small street with easy access on foot to Gion and bus stop only a minute away to major attractions in Kyoto. We certainly missed this hotel and its staff and will definitely return during our next visit to Kyoto. P.S. the bread basket for breakfast was really yummy and the free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel made us feel ‘connected’.

From the moment we walked in the front door, we experienced an incredibly high level of personalized, attentive service. Everyone was gracious and considerate and we thoroughly enjoyed the decor and modern amenities in our room. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer! Definitely the place to stay in Kyoto if you're looking to avoid the big hotel experience.
