We spent 5 nights last month in the Kiiyomizu Tenseian. We are family of 4. The apartment is more than enough to accomodate us, much bigger than the apartment we stayed in Tokyo. Haraguchi-san picked us up from the Kyoto station and actually also gave us a ride back to the station in the last day. It is very close to the bus stop. Kiyomizu temple is just a walking distance. Hope we will be back to Kyoto one day for fall season and we will definetely will stay here again.

I came with my two friends to Kyoto with the desire to leave the city and go back in time.....this was the perfect place. There was a room for each of us, and we had the house to ourselves. As many people mentioned, this is not a normal ryokan experience : no one lives in the house with you and no one makes you meals. But this was actually just what we wanted. We needed a home to ourselves in a quiet park, where we could rest and sit in a kind of ancient Japanese silence that comes from the old architecture of japan.

We are vegetarians, so we thought it would be easier to find great food around town rather than have to negotiate vegetarian food at a guest house that serves fixed meal plans.Kyoto is full of great places to eat.

You can take a 2 minute taxi to the place from the main shopping/dining area, which we did a couple times...or you can take the most beautiful 15 minute walk through the cherry blossom and temple filled park. We loved it.

Mr. Haragushi was great. Wonderful artist and refined man. Picked us up from the train and also was able to drive us to a couple places.

It is not cheap to stay here. There were hotels that cost less. But it was a one-of a kind experience. It was essentially renting a traditional Japenese home alone, away from the crowds. We loved it and recommend it.

We ve spent a week in the Salon Haraguchi house and can only confirm the excellent reviews reported by other travellers. The house is a century old, full of character, space, and beautifully decorated notably with the splendid ceramic works of Mr Haraguchi; it has at the same time all the modern comfort (wifi, aircon, washing machine and dryer) needed. It is ideally situated just above a park and 5-10 mn walk away from the delightful and scenic area of Gion (it is difficult to find the house the 1st time you come to it; the best way to find it and to go the large bell of the Chion temple: on the right hand side when you face the bell, there is a small paved road on the right and up: the house is just there, on the lace above). Shops, restaurants, department stores, are also very close on foot, so that everything you need is easily within walking distance.
Last but not least, Mr Haraguchi's sense of hospitality is wonderful: he took much of his personal time to make us feel at home and enjoy our stay, driving us to wonderful sightseeing points that would have been difficult for us to reach with metro or bus, and giving us plenty of advice on where to eat, where to go. We could never thank him enough for all this efforts to help up discover the many little treasures of the town.
All in all, this was an unforgettable experience to have our own house in the wonderful city of Kyoto and we will certainly come back.

We have appreciated very much the welcoming of takushi haragushi-san and his wife. An ideal location, not far from most of the key places to visit. How could you have a multi-room appartment in Kyoto in such conditions ? And on the top, a warm and dedicated man who drove us in the far west of Kyoto to access the remaining key places of the city during half a day. Many thanks and long life to this guesthouse.

Our family of four stayed at Kiyomizu Tenseian for four nights, and like many others who have posted here, we had a great stay. The apartment is well-equipped, clean and very quiet in a residential area, while being within walking distance or a short bus ride to many attractions. Several good grocery stores and an excellent bakery are 5-10 minutes walk away, which is particularly convenient if you’d like breakfast at the apartment. Mr. Haraguchi is indeed a gracious host with excellent suggestions for sightseeing and dining, and we greatly appreciated his taking an afternoon to kindly drive us to several of our favorite sites in the Northwestern part of the city. If you are looking for all the trimmings of a five star hotel, this isn’t it, but if you’d like a comfortable home base for touring and a sense of day to day life in a typical Kyoto neighborhood, it certainly fits the bill. We’d be happy to return when (not if) we return to Kyoto for another visit.

We arranged to stay four nights at the Tenseian as part of a two-week trip to Japan. It was definitely the highlight of our stay. Kyoto does not require us to sing its praises as it is simply one of the most beautiful places in the world. But it should be said that the Tenseian is a particularly well placed spot from which to explore the city, placed as it is near many of the finest temples and close to Gion which is the district foreign tourists are likely to find most captivating in the evenings.

The owner of the Tenseian, Mr Haraguchi, made every imaginable effort to have me and my partner feel at home in what was previously his own home: he and his wife were there to greet us upon arrival from the station, he took us to several of the more far-flung temples and shrines thus greatly increasing the number of wonderful sights we were able to visit, he showed us where to eat, where to wander, and even where to stand if we wished to catch a glimpse of a geisha. As we are interested in pottery and ceramics we asked if we could see his own work - he is a superb potter - and he showed us his studio where we could admire his fine work (some of which is in the Biritish Museum).

The accommodation itself is all one might wish for from a Japanese house: full of atmosphere, genuine, comfortable, and in the midst of glorious trees. The walk home there every evening, through the shrine and the park, was one of the highlights of our stay - so peaceful and enchanting.

I feel I can't finish this review without saying a word about the one negative review that I read on Tripadvisor. I had to laugh when its author ("Nice couple but rough accommodation") suggested that what was "rough" was that he had been bitten by some mosquitoes! Can he really imagine that the presence of mosquitoes in the environment is an inn-keeper's responsibility! (The inn itself has effective anti-mosquito shutters.) And as for the notion that walking through the park at night is dangerous or unsuitable for women and children, this is simply preposterous: the park and its environs - note, the ryokan is not in the park, as the author suggests but above it - struck me and my partner both as eminently safe and utterly lovely. I am a well seasoned traveller in East and West and I have never had less of a sense of threat or danger than when staying at the Tenseian. Next time, sir, pack your mosquito spray for your walks through the woods, and take your tesar against the phantoms in your head!

We left Kyoto determined to return before long, and I hope it will be to Mr Haraguhi's Tenseian Salon where we spent such happy days and evenings. Such hospitality is very hard to find.

After a couple of days of staying in a big conference hotel in Kyoto, this was a real 'coming home' feeling. Haragachu-san welcomed us at the bus station, it was just like being welcomed by a good old friend who brings you home and makes your stay as pleasant as possible. The house, Japanese style, was clean and very convenient. Everything you need is there: washing machine, drying machine, tv, computer, small kitchen ,...) i. I felt if I could come to Kyoto for a longer time, I could stay here. The place is nicely located, just a couple of blocks away to interesting and lively places. We got some interesting inside information of where to go for lunch and dinner, places we wouldn't have found on our own, all very typically Japanese, off the beaten track. Our surprise was big when Mr. Haraguchi invited us on a sightseeing trip in Kyoto and showed us two wonderful places, a very quitet old temple complex and a shinto shrine (Fushimi Inari), definitely worth a visit. He did it just like that, we were very grateful for such amazing hospitality. Thank you mr. Haraguchi, we wish you many good friends and guests from all over the world.
