Found this Temple by accident, Extremely serene landscaping amongst beautiful architecture with an amazing dragon mural on the ceiling of one building. Bring your camera!

Stumbled upon Kenninji temple at the end of Hanamikoji street in Gion, not knowing about it before coming here. The landscaping was nice and the area seems peaceful. Later learned that it is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and that it has multiple rock gardens. I didn't get to see the rock gardens as they were already closed by early evening. Am pleasantly surprised by the find and would visit here again to view the rock gardens.

Kennin-Ji is a magnificent old Zen temple in the east of Kyoto (very close to some of the major sights). Amazing zen gardens, smaller crowds, wonderful painting of two dragons fighting. 5/5 because of how quiet it is - like a temple should be.

By that i mean that this is not as reviewed as other temples and not among the very top places to visit in Kyoto, but that is just what it really is. Non hyped beautiful place with so much to offer. Much more than many others, more famous and known. One of the best!

Wow!
The oldest zen temple temple...
Beautiful murals throughout...
Definately worth the visit...
There are so many temples and shrines in Kyoto.
And most of the are pretty much within walking distance of each other.
Each one has some thing to contribute to your visit, but a few like this one make a lasting impression...
