“Quiet respite”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

Lovely, contemplative and not as crowded as the other temples I visited in the area. I drove to each location and found that it expedited things easier, though parking often was expensive.

“one of my favorite places in kyoto”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

there is so much to see in kyoto you almost have to pick and choose. i chose this due to its location to Gion. wow, was i not disappointed. we managed to get into the temple right at 4pm and watch the monks hold their daily service. or whatever it was. it was awesome. the ceiling is truly spectacular and the grounds are really special. then we managed to watch the monks have their dinner. and during all this a geisha was in the temple being photographed but 6 professional cameramen for some shoot. i dont know how many of the other temples or shrines could offer up this much neato japanese culture all at one sitting. really really enjoyed this place. and its so easy to see if you visit gion.

“Fantastic”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

Wow, this Zen temple was never on my radar, but decided to pop in as we were walking past. I now know the meaning of the word Zen. It seemed to attract a lot less tourists than other temples, and was beautiful and peaceful. The twin dragon temple was amazing!

“Atmospheric Temple with Beautiful Buddhist Artwork”
Reviewed May 27, 2012

This is located conveniently in the Gion district, and if you have interest in art and architecture, I recommend paying a visit. The only drawback is that most of the explanations are in Japanese and more limited info in English, but this is the case with most places in Japan (and not a problem if you can read Japanese, of course). The rooms, scrolls, sliding door paintings, sculptures, and central garden are captivating and mysterious, especially on a misty day such as when I came.

“Good”
Reviewed April 6, 2012

a great temple, but an excellent rating is largely for the Hanami street (if i have spelled it correctly) around the temple to observe the real Geishas in action, a great place for picture taking. I went arounf 9pm and we saw quite a few geishas walking to these member-only houses for work i presume. Get a good camera and practice your "quick-shot" skills before hand, coz the Geishas move fast!!
