“Exactly what I was looking for”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

We went here earlier today and I couldn't be happier with our choice. We had some trouble finding the bamboo path but once we found that there were plenty of signs that told us where the garden was. If you are taking the JR train, get off at the Saga Arashiyama station so you can approach the garden through the beautiful bamboo path. It was so peaceful in the garden and it was great to rest afterwards with complementary tea and snack.

“Peaceful mountain park with a green tea stop”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

The place is not really popular especially for foreign visitors - if somebody gets there it is after a local person brought them or recommended. The ticket is double the average rate for temples and gardens, 1000 yen, which is maybe another reason it doesn't get many visitors. But in fact that was something I liked - really close to the very crowded bamboo grove, but in Okochisanso you hardly meet anybody and you can enjoy the place for hours. The ticket includes a cupon for free green tea in a nice green tea hall which has beautiful view to lush green trees. As long as the place is on the slope of the mountain, rainy days are not good for the place, it will be too wet and muddy. But if you're lucky with the weather, you can see wonderful green colors of big variety of vegetation, see a few nice buildings, relax. The place might be difficult for old people and very young kids, you can't go there with a wheel chair or a baby stroller. There is a small gallery with pictures of the actor whose villa it used to be - Denjirō Ōkōchi.

“A Highlight of My Trip”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

This beautiful villa and garden was built by a Japanese movie star in the mid-20th century, and visiting it was one of the highlights of my week in Kyoto. There is a very clearly marked footpath around the gardens, and a bonus was that hardly anyone was there when I visited. It was so serene, and some of the spots in the garden provided million-yen views. Included with the price of admission is tea (the best cold matcha I've ever had) and a sweet in their lovely tea room. In a city with a lot of (justifiably) crowded tourist spots, this place offered tranquility and silence.

“Along hullabaloo bamboo trailU will come across this garden”
Reviewed June 17, 2014 via mobile

Do not miss the trail behind the house .. I was lucky enough .. Shares from another tourist .. Near the rest rooms u will find a trail that meanders up the hills ..how it was landscaped si naturally is just amazing ... I kept thinking to myself .. What a lucky guy to have found
this spot .. I wonder how the actor manage to create such a beautiful place .. There must be quite a few creative people living in these parts of kyoto .. Am glad i stayed 2 days .. Am glad to have found guesthouse Atagoya .. An extra day was needed to have seen more temples i opted for the wonderful boat rides .. U will find them to the right of the famous bridge

“One of the best”
Reviewed June 1, 2014 via mobile

A truly lovely garden, with winding little pathways leading you up & down from one beautiful scene to the next. We had the subtle 'green' version, with young maple leaves giving colour and shade. Completed with a cup of green tea overlooking the adjacent bamboo grove. (Note: Paths are uneven and steep in places).
