My favorite of Kyoto's many gorgeous temples. The temple oozes serenity and you could spend all day here gazing at the lush greenery,

We sat and looked into this zen garden and. Counted the rocks etc, but, we were amused to see a tiny lizard walk through the stones slowly. Many missed it, what a delight to break ones contemplation, it was no respecter of persons.
We enjoyed hearing all about the temple and emperor and samurai also.
I am so glad we saw all of these gardens and temples

See it in the rain. The smells of the earth and nature were intoxicating. Spent two hours drifting around. Listening to the rain fall and the frogs croak. Contemplating. Watching. Listening.

After reading much for many years about Ryoanji, it was indeed great to be able to tick it off my bucket list. A stone's thrown from Kinkaku-ji, you may plan to do both of these in a morning or an afternoon. Some observations were intriguing, like strategically-placed rows of red buckets of water around the buildings. It's good to know that these ancient buildings were left untouched by modern building codes. Even better that a fire didn't break out while we were there!

this temple contains the zen rock garden, perhaps japan's most famous rock garden. founded in 1450. the garden contains 15 moss covered stones, surrounded by carefully raked and groomed sand.

from any vantage point, only 14 of the 15 stones can be seen. in Buddhism, the number 15 signifies completion, which is not thought to be possible in this world.

it sounds simplistic, and perhaps a lot of hype for 15 rocks and sand, but our entire family (even our children, aged 22, 15, and 12) was highly impressed and thougt it was one of the highlights of our trip to japan.
