“The perfect Zen garden”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The amazing rock garden is set in an enclosed space, in which the internal walls are made of clay mixed with oil, which over the years has created a kind of subtle 'fresco' in which the light brownish tinge contrasts with the white-grey gravel of the rock garden. It is a place for meditation, set in a wonderful large, more traditional garden with extensive water features and rare trees, birds and frogs. It can be reached from the centre with a 15 minutes drive by bus.

“Can't get any more ZEN than this!”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

This place is really beautiful and yet very simple in concept. its the epitome of Zen. Ryoanji features this rock garden zen thing which is done perfectly. The sands are perfectly combed, I wonder how they manage to keep those perfect despite the weather and stuff. It's a very Tranquil place and perfect to stop over to catch your breath and think about life. The temple is located North of Central Kyoto and is walking distance to the Ninnaji Temple which features a unique Sakura. So I suggest visiting this places when you're planning to visit north Kyoto. A must visit! though it might not be big for the kids.

“One of the more tranquil temples/shrines we visited in Kyoto”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Was a lovely diversion form the bamboo walk that we had initially set out to visit. The temple grounds are lovely and tranquil. Like on of the other reveiwers it was raining the day we were there so there weren't too many people if at all which made it a loveyl quiet exeprience. Would recommend a visit if you are out that way doing the romantic railway trip or visiting the bamboo walk.

“We felt the Zen - great on a rainy day”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

My husband and I really enjoyed our visit here. Peaceful, beautiful, and relaxing. The leaves were just starting to turn and the trees in the surrounding gardens were all interesting. We timed our visit here based on the fact that it was raining and I think that really helped--the crowds were pretty thin and we were able to both sit and stare at the rock garden and wander the grounds without struggling through crowds. Listening to the rain hit the small rocks around the main rock garden was mesmerizing. Kids would most definitely find it boring, and I understand if you want a "quick fix" that you may not really appreciate it here. If you like wandering some quiet paths and can time it when it's not mobbed, you may like it as much as we did.
