“Wonderful experience in kyoto”

If a traditional Ryokan in Kyoto is what your looking for, then you can't go wrong with the Sakura. It's location is about a 15 minute walk from the main station and very close to bus routes. You have 2 temples near by as well.
When we arrived we were told our room would not be ready till 3pm but were offered Bali tea and told they would look after our cases.
The room was very clean and well presented. The only down side was the door way into the bathroom was very low and I had to make sure I bent down every time I went to use it.
The staff were excellent and always helpful and friendly and offered trip advice when asked.
Great value for money as well.

This is the place to stay. I stayed here with my 13 year old son- we were touring Japan together. Great location, clean and well run. The courteous, accommodating, and professional English speaking staff will assist you with maps, directions and suggestions. The rooms are wonderful, the food (breakfast) is good and affordable, and the atmosphere is very friendly and comforting. The location is extremely good- near the station, but in a quiet neighborhood with plenty of places to eat, and also a short walk to several temples worth checking out. We rented bicycles from a shop a few blocks away- best way to see Kyoto- covered a lot of ground and it was very safe and easy (bike paths on every street- bicycle friendly city). This is not a traditional ryokan for those seeking the authentic and often very expensive experience, this place is a small cozy hotel run like a ryokan with traditional rooms (tatami mats and roll away futon beds- although they may have some western style rooms as well)- and bathrooms en suite. The hotel offers a traditional as well as western breakfast for a small charge (400-800 yen). Beer, soda and other beverages can be bought at the kitchen/front desk after a long day of sight seeing- you can drink in your room or sit in the comfortable shared area (colelction books, newspapers and a computer for use) and socialize with others. Rooms have mini fridge (empty), hot water kettles and cups. The place is very well designed and comfortable.

Room Tip: Go with a traditional Japanese room.

This seems like a really nice Ryokan when you look on the website.
Sounds great, seems great on pictures. BUT in real life it was really small, the bathroom even smaller.
We were sleeping with 3 persons in the Sukiya-style room with garden.
With 3 people the floor was filled with futons and you had to walk over the other persons to go to the bathroom. So I think its big enough for 2 people to stay in that room. It was also really quiet in the hotel so thats a plus.

Breakfast is not complimentary and really expensive in comparison to what you get (we didnt eat at the ryokan).

It's far away from any stores, so you have to walk at least 15minutes before you can get anything to eat in the morning.

One thing was really awesome. There was a tiny little noodle shop within a five minute walk where we ate two nights in a row. It was great food!!

Everything about this ryokan was great. It was located on a very quiet street yet near to public transportation making it easy to get around. The staff was "awesome". They were friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and had more resources then I expected, e.g., small kitchenette, internet, TV etc. The mats and mattresses were very comfortable ensuring that we all got a good night's sleep.

I would go back to this place in a heart beat.

Kyoto is GREAT!!!

Really nice Japanese style place to enjoy your visit to Kyoto. really nice and helpfull staff. Ask for places to eat, really good choices nearby. Everything you need is in the room, including slippers, yukata, tea set, tv, and Internet connection (not Wi-fi in the room). Newspapers in Japanese and English in the lobby. Highly recommended.

My family stayed here for 3 days in July, 2013. We had two rooms - one Japanese style, one western style.

Rooms were lovely and well appointed. They provide yukata (pajama robes) with each room. Futons in the Japanese room were clean and comfortable. Each room has a separate bathroom (no shared bath, if you are looking for that). Showers and baths clean. The only fault with the rooms is the lack of space to put bags, hang clothes and so forth, but that is not uncommon in Japan.

Breakfast options include continental (400 yen), Japanese or Western ( both 800). Breakfasts aree served in the beautiful "lobby" area. All of the food was excellent.

Other bonuses: the staff was very friendly and spoke excellent English (which is helpful when your Japanese is rudimentary) and can give directions and recommendations, there is a way to do laundry, and the area is quiet. Location is good for bus access.

Some considerations: it is difficult to find if you don't have good directions, being on a side street. If you are looking for a lively nighttime area you will need to take a bus.

I would definitely stay here again on any trip to Kyoto.

Room Tip: Choose a Japanese room only if you are ok with getting out and putting away your own futons and can...

I actually stayed here last year during hanami and I plan to stay there again when I go back later this year. *the 'when did you travel' tab didn't have an option for April 2012, FYI*

It is a charming place. The lobby area (if you could call it that) is warm and inviting, and they sometimes have Japanese art or craft lessons there for the guests. We opted for the sukiya room with a little garden. And I mean a LITTLE garden. The room was tidy, cozy, with a shower and a toilet which were small, but we expected that. We had to prepare our own futons for bed, and that in itself was a hilarious episode, but thank God my friend knew how to do hospital corners.

The staff made our stay very pleasant. They speak reasonably good English, were friendly and warm, and offered us good advice on where to eat or when to go where. We had a little adventure where we arrived at a maiko henshin studio owned by a former geiko, and we had to press the buzzer to let the former geiko know we've arrived, but all the buzzers and names of the residents of the building were in kanji (my friend and I don't read kanji, but I can understand some conversational Japanese)! I called the staff at the ryokan and asked if they could help call the studio owner to let her know we've arrived (since we don't know how to let ourselves in).

Thankfully, the studio owner came down to rescue us. At the ryokan later, the staff who helped us call the studio asked us how we enjoyed our makeover. We learned that she also had hers done as well! I didn't get her name but she is friendly, pretty, speaks good English and her smile really made our day. The next time I go back, I hope she is still there. :)

What made the difference for me for this place vs other places I stayed at in Kyoto is the staff. Definitely the staff. I recommended this place to a friend who stayed there and she loves it too.
