Toji Temple, literally "East Temple", was founded at the beginning of the Heian Period just after the capital was moved to Kyoto in the late 700s. The large temple, together with its now defunct sister temple Saiji ("West Temple"), flanked the south entrance to the city and served as the capital's guardian temples. Toji Temple is one of Kyoto's many UNESCO world heritage sites.

If you have never seen a five-storey pagoda, I recommend this temple. The pagoda is the tallest in Japan at 55 meters. You can't get into the pagoda and can see the pagoda from the admission-free area. Other than that, you can see mandara statues in the lecture hall (500 yen admission). Usually, mandara is a picture showing the world of Buddhism, but in this temple, the world is shown with statues. Unfortunately, photo-taking is prohibited in the hall. If you are interested in Buddhism, this temple is a must-see. Otherwise, visit Sanjusangendo Hall. That's more impressive.

This review is about the flea market and not the temple itself. We planned our 5 day trip to Kyoto around the first Sunday of the month and we weren't disappointed with the flea market. You could spend hours here... and lots of money. I was looking for second-hand yukuta and fabric (for home decoration), crockery, and tea pots/sets, and there were heaps of bargains, but you had to carefully look for them. Fortunately/unfortunately, my card didn't work at the ATM that morning, and I had only 2000 yen on me, otherwise I might have been 20,000 poorer!

I'd never been to Toji, just never got around to it on previous visits. We were able to go inside the pagoda (not usual as I understand it) and we paid ¥800 as an entry fee rather than the expected ¥500. If you like Buddhist statues and history, this temple ranks up there with the best as the oldest in Kyoto and with the patronage of Kukai. The Buddhist statues are really amazing and show a wide range of Buddhist iconography that can instruct those new to Buddhism. Helps to see it with someone who can explain or you can read up on the early history of Buddhism in Kyoto. (Dingell's book on Kyoto)

In an unlikely location, the site is split into different areas and you can chose and pay for the ones you want to see. The 5 storey pagoda is the best one as it include two other temples - one with 101 budha statues. The pagoda was impressive from the outside but small and shabby inside. The gardens were great with turtles and carp and ducklings entertaining us.
