“Experience The Essence of the Kyoto!! 最高の京都の旅を <3”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

FIrst of all I do not why some of the Japanese people rated this place low.. I'm Japanese and I found this place the MOST IDEAL place to stay in Kyoto for 3 major reasons!! 1) Best Location 2) Best Hospitality 3) Best Price!!!!

Location is at the heart of Kyoto where Yasaka Shrine is located. It is a very sacred sight surrounded by many "Power Spots". Besides I think it is the only place you can spend a night inside the prestigious Maruyama Park!!

Hospitality is their main attraction.. The people who work there are know who they are.. There is no fake greetings or any services. The workers do something for you because they sincerely want to,, not because they are getting paid!

Cheap!! It is about $80 USD for per person for a night!!!!

With all 3 obvious reasons, I rate this place 5 stars!!!!!

Yoshimizu offered a great ryokan experience. Our room was on the small side but clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts were a great way to start the day. The shared bathrooms were lovely. We had a room with a private toilet, which was almost next door to the shared ones, so not really worth the extra money. It's set in a quiet location near Maruyama Park, which was tranquil but slightly remote; as we were visiting in the summer, the walk back up to the ryokan in the summer heat was a bit of a killer.

Fantastic location in woods 10 mins walk from some of Kyoto's greatest temples and the lanes off Shijo Dori.

It is at the top of a bank but there are great things to see on your way to and from town.

The staff are great and helpful when you are trying to plan your day. Without them we would not have got as much from our visit

We are a family of 5 and stayed in a 14 tatami room. It had its own toilet but all guests share Japanese style bathrooms which are immaculately clean and can be locked. I found sleeping on the floor a bit of a struggle, but you go for the authentic experience and I recommend it. Breakfasts of Miso soup, eggs and toast are generous. A great place to stay.

But you will need a cab to get to and from the station because the hill to the ryokan is too steep to drag a case.

This is a Awesome guest house! If you going to Kyoto I can strongly recomend this place. Very quiet and cozy and alot of atmosphere. One of my top stays in Japan and I will defenitiv come back. Just a notis, The guesthouse is located in a park so it is a bit of, but in a good way.

If you want to experience the Japanese-style inn (ry`okan) in Kyoto, this is the place for you. Yoshi-mizu (literally "lucky water") is perched on the top of the hill of the splendid Maruyama park, a true oasis of nature adjacent to Kyoto's historical district, Gion.
I recommend it very warmly: the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the atmosphere cosy and relaxed, and you can communicate in English without any problems. The staff will take time to give you advice on anything you may want to know, from Japanese terms to sightseeing to transport.
Here are some practical points to consider before you book:
- Yoshimizu is literally on the top of a hill and you get there by taxi when arriving with luggage
(print out the map and address in Japanese from their website); I spent about 1,500 yen
from Kyoto station);
- it takes about 10 minutes to walk down the hill to Gion main street (Shijio-dori), and probably
15-20, depending on your strengths, to walk back up through the lovely park: consider this
if you are looking for an accommodation easily accessed;
- "Japanese style inn" means, in practice, that
* your bed is a futon on the floor,
* you make it yourself in the evening and put it away in the morning,
* the bathroom has several small showers and one traditional bath pool (but the inn makes
guests take turns to wash, instead of everybody washing together as in real Japanese
public baths),
* you must take off shoes when entering the inn and put on slippers, and
take off the slippers when entering your room,
* your room does not have conventional chairs, but one chair without legs to sit at the low
table,
* my room did not have a wardrobe, only a space where to hang clothes (there were 5
coat hangers).
Again, consider all the above if you are expecting or prefer something more western. I personally loved this place to bits and will definitely be back next time I stay in Kyoto.

This was everything I wanted in a ryokan in Kyoto, I loved it. Tucked into the forest, but not too far to walk to sights, with homey accommodations and friendly staff.

We stayed 3 nights, and each day when we returned we were greeted at the door with iced water or iced tea. We had a delicious tea (houija, new to me and they helped me figure out the word and how to buy some) and hot water waiting in our rooms. The rooms had a beautiful view and were very clean...shared bathrooms were not a problem, the hot tub was a nice treat at night, and they provided slippers for walking around the ryokan. The futons were comfy, as well as the linens, and the yukata (bathrobes) were nice. I'm used to futons and camping, so this was no problem, but I can see how someone accustomed to a soft mattress might not like them.

The staff when we were there were quite helpful with sightseeing and their English was good. We got restaurant, temple, and walking route recommendations, as well special requests like koi (carp) ponds. Be sure to ask for directions to Rakusho. The ice cream desserts were excellent and you can spend a pleasant half hour there overlooking a tiny but superb garden and pond with amazing koi.

We liked the walk up and down the hill and through the temple, and at night the temple is beautiful and the paths well-lit. Their walking directions need some work. The easiest we found was to enter through the main gate of the temple, and stay to the right until you reach the pond. Cross the pond and walk up along the stream, crossing when you feel like it, and continuing up until you reach a road. Continue up that until you reach a small stone temple, then take the stairs attached to the temple. Turn to the right, go up the driveway, and Yoshimizu will be the house on the left. We took a cab from the main train station, showing him the directions from their website, and it was fine, 1500yen. They managed to get a cab for us on a busy Saturday for 5 people b/c we had an early train to catch, and that was an easy way to get back. Although the subway is not hard to figure out, it is not as extensive as Tokyo and a bit more hassle to get to the main station from there. As you can imagine, the walk requires someone fit enough to walk uphill a little bit and climb some stairs. Little kids would not have a problem, and I can attest that the stream is very attractive to some--turtles, frogs, and dragonflies abound. A cab is an alternative, and they are prevalent at the major sights.

I looked forward to the breakfasts! The food was of very high quality, and I loved the tray of fruit, boiled egg, toasts and vegetable stew or soup; plus coffee and black tea. The kids enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and room to stretch outside. I loved sitting in the room, having a cup of tea, and looking at the garden. Would return in a heartbeat.

The property

A detached wooden house with about eight or nine letting bedrooms tucked away at the eastern edge of old Kyoto. The house is set on the edge of a wood, and behind the house the hill rises to wooded peace. In front the ground falls to a park. There are properties either side, so not completely set apart, but in a very crowded country there is an unusual feeling of peace and greenery. Gion, the old part of Kyoto, is a seven minute walk down the hill.

The property has a small communal dining/sitting area, comfortably scruffy and domestic.

The room

A traditional Japanese room – about 100 square feet, tatami mat floor, one central light, paper blinds on the windows, all wood. Nowhere to sit, just a low table.

The bathroom

The bedrooms share two communal bathrooms. Each bathroom has a shower and a hot tub, the tub about the size on one quarter of a small Jacuzzi, but just deep enough for an adult to immerse if not stretch out. One has to queue for the bathrooms. Our room shared a loo with one other.

The bed

A futon. If you don’t mind effectively sleeping on the floor this is very cute, but if you like or need a bit more comfort this is pretty uncomfortable. You have to make and unmake the bed yourself each night.

Ambient noise and light

In April (no aircons on) the ambient noise was simply birdsong in the woods behind – very nice indeed. In summer, I think you would get a lot of aircon chiller hum all the time (there was one a few feet from my window).

Other comments

Breakfast is included – vegetable soup, yoghurt, toast and marmalade, with impossibly small offerings of butter (we had to request more several times). Breakfast times are quite constrained. No other meals are offered.
Staff are very obliging and helpful but with only about six words of English between them.
The property is very hard to find for the first time – the map on their website is an essential aide for taxi drivers.
