Budget guesthouse in a fantastic location in Kyoto (10 mins walk from the station, 15 from Gion). The main appeal of this inn was the price, as we'd opted for an expensive onsen hotel in another part of our trip that blew most of our accommodation budget!
You do get what you pay for with the price - no meals included (although there are facilities to make coffee and tea) and the rooms are quite small (you have to fold up the futons during the day). The shared toilets and showers are spotless though, and we never had to queue to use them. The room itself felt a little shabby (the tatami mats kept flaking off on our clothes!) but for the price we really couldn't complain.
We were greeted by an English-speaking guy who showed us around, as he said the owner doesn't speak English (so I'm not sure what happened to the lady mentioned in some of the reviews).
If you're looking for a traditional ryokan experience, this isn't it although you will get a good flavour of what it's like to stay in one. Definitely a good option for budget accommodation in an otherwise expensive city.
