“Fantastic!”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

I slept in the female dorm for 3 nights. Points to note:
- Awesome location
- Sociable host
- Clean
- Traditional house with a twist
- Relaxing atmosphere

I really can't find faults with this guesthouse. The location is superb, minutes from the station, right in Gion, walking distance to a few main temples.

The host was very interactive, and that has helped all the guests to interact with each other. The common room is a great place to hang out. Since the guesthouse is not huge, I felt that all the guests are pretty tight-knit, which was nice.

Totally in love with the decor and the ambience of the place. In a place as busy and crowded with tourist as Kyoto, and Gion being the centre of it all, IchiEnsou is really a wonderful place to get home to.

Stayed here for 2 nights in August - very hot month :). Our airconditioned 4 bed japanese style room was perfect (just kept forgetting to take off our shoes). Communal room also great and the staff was very helpful and friendly, even leaving a note on the door saying they were out for drinks if anyone wanted to join :) We loved our stay here and would love to come back again!

IchiEnSou has so much going for it it's hard to know where to start in the review. It's probably the loveliest budget accommodation I've ever stayed at. The decor is very nice and the whole place, rooms, common spaces, bathrooms, kitchen, are impeccably clean and comfortable. It's basically a large, beautiful old home that has been converted into a guesthouse so it's very cosy and atmospheric. The owner, Yashi, is very kind and goes out of his way to answer questions and help guests. He went out for dinner or drinks with guests more than once while I was staying there. The other guests were all quiet and courteous.

The guesthouse is also very well-located, right off of the main intersection in Gion but down a quiet residential street so you're near all the action but staying in a peaceful, quiet place. You really couldn't be in a better spot in Kyoto. It's 2 minutes from endless shopping and dinning options and 5-15 minutes easy walking from most of the sites and since it's in such a prominent and central location there are ample buses to the outlaying sites and temples. It is a bit tricky to find upon arrival though, I suggest taking a cab from the bus terminal. I believe it cost about 1000 yen (so around $12 USD).

Just two little notes that some people find important-- check-in isn't until 4pm (though you can leave your bags and spend time in the common room if your bed isn't ready) and there are no lockers or safes in the room (though you can leave valuables with the staff if you prefer).

I really can't overstate it, this is a great place with everything going for it: Centrally located, clean, comfortable, very welcoming. I whole-heartedly recommend staying here and would definitely stay here again if I returned to Kyoto.

I only stayed one night but the hostel was great because it was clean, walking distance from a lot of temples and I even managed to see geisha walking in the back alley streets, and the owner was knowledgeable. Would recommend the nice atmosphere in the common room which had jazz playing in the background.

IchiEnSou is a charming little guesthouse located right by an impressive looking Japanese theatre. It is easy to find and a stone's throw away from Gion night life - close enough to be with all the action within a few minutes but tucked away in the quiet part. I found IchiEnSou to very clean, gorgeously decorated and accommodating. Yashi and his wife are polite and very helpful. We had great conversations and insight into Japanese culture. I also managed to find black sesame ice cream in Kyoto - turned out to be a bit of a rarity - who would've thought? Kyoto is simply magical and I could not have picked a better base than IchiEnSou to explore it. The only thing, if a bad thing could be said, is that the guesthouse does not offer private rooms. I did loads of research and found this guesthouse to be given a rating of 98% - didn't disappoint. I highly recommend this guesthouse.

I visited here with a friend back in March 2009, and really enjoyed my stay at IchiEnSou. Yashi is a great host, he's in the business not to make money but just to enjoy meeting new people. Being a hostel, there were mainly young guests (like ourselves), but all were friendly and well behaved. There were Japanese guests as well - which was a good sign.

The place itself is in a fantastic location (if a little difficult to find at first!), it's very clean and has great facilities for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place.

I was traveling with two female friends and we booked all four beds in the female dorm so we could have the room to ourselves. The rates were very reasonable so it was quite affordable to do so on our small budget. There's a share bathroom which is very clean and because the house only sleeps a small amount of people there was never much competition for the services.

Our host, Yashi speaks English quite well, and with an Australian accent! (He studied philosophy in Tasmania for a few years if I remember correctly) Breakfast was also reasonably priced, and Yashi asked us lots of questions about which breakfast we preferred and what we thought of the coffee. He is genuinely interested in providing a good service and always seeking advice for improvement. (And by the way, as far as coffee goes in Japan, it was probably the best we had!)

There's a great yaki tori bar around the corner and it's really close to the station so the location was excellent. I would definitely stay here again.
