Sparkling Dolphins Inn Kyoto
Ranked #105 of 155 B&Bs / Inns in Kyoto
Reviewed August 9, 2013

was the first of a few hostels my party of 5 and I put up during our 2 week long stay in Japan.

the place, though offering free wi-fi, only allows its guests to hang around at the common area till 11pm. i presume this is because the owners themselves stay in a room just adjacent to the common area, of which this room is merely separated by a partition and thus our congregation could very well disturb them.

the room accommodates 10 people and is extremely poorly lit and crammed. the only personal space each person had was their bed and all their belongings had to be stored either underneath the bed or in a dark corner by the side which made it really a challenge whenever one had to obtain / search for something from their bag.

one of their sinks was also out, leaving only one sink available for 10 people to share, which can be quite irritating when everyone gets up together at the same time. the inn is also about a 15 - 20 minute walk away from the JR Kyoto Station, although it is serviced by a couple of buses.

overall, an okay experience, though not deserving of 3 stars.

I stayed at the Sparkling Dolphins Inn twice in the summer of 2012, both times with high school students. I will stay here again when I lead my next student trip. The staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, and though it was a bit spartan (bring your own soap for the bathroom!) that really didn't matter as we were out all day seeing the sights. The evenings were quiet and we were able to sleep in air-conditioned peace. There is a bus stop located just outside the door and Kyoto station is within easy walking distance. Also, if you take the nearest subway (about two blocks from the inn) to the end of the line at Takeda you can visit a "super-sento," and relax in the hot baths after a day on your feet.

We stayed at this inn in Kyoto in July of 2012. I was traveling with a group of 40 (32 high school students, and 8 adults), so our primary concern was finding a low cost option that could accomodate that large of a group.

The owners of the Sparkling Dolphin were very gracious hosts and made our group feel welcome. The rooms are small and spare, but that's to be expected at this price point. There is a Lawson's 100-yen store just a block away that allows for low cost breakfast/lunch options as well which worked well for us. A bus stop is located right outside the inn for ease of transportation around Kyoto and if you're not afraid of walking you can walk from the main train station to the inn (we did it in 95 degree heat and 90% humidity with our large hiking backpacks... not ideal, but we lived to tell about it so it's doable!)

Overall, if you're looking for a budget traveling option I would recommend the inn as a great place to stay in Kyoto.

We were travelling in a group of 5 and so we chose to stay at Sparkling Dolpins inn becasue they have a room that can accomodate all of us. The room is tatami style and spacious enough. It is clean and we did our own cooking as there is a fridge and stove available. The bathroom is small but just nice. Location wise is about 20 mins walk from the train station but the distance shorten after we found a short cut. Overall a nice neighbourhood and good choice if you are on tight budget.

This place is good if you just need a place to stay. Staff is helpful and friendly. The atmosphere seems more like a hotel. Clean showers and clean rooms. Overall, descent place to stay but not very fun and had a dull vibe to it.

We were in Dolphins for a night because everything else was overbooked in Kyoto due a bank holiday last october 2012.

We were in a very small dort, super tiny, 10 beds, and in beds number 7 and 8 there were BEADBUGS!!

We could kill 7 or 8 of them, and next morning we show them to the staff and we intend to speak with the owner but he didn't show.

Please, be careful, it was really annoying! We would never recommed this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Don't choose the dort, and never ever, beds 7 and 8

This is not a traditional ryokan, but an inn with a tatami sleeping room. you have bathroom & toilets within the room, plus a fridge & wash basin. The room is quite spacious, with a balcony outside. And right when you want to sleep you can enjoy the fluorescent sparkling dolphins in the ceiling paper - thus the name
The only disadvantage is the location is a bit far from the station and a bit tricky to get to in the first place, so you need to walk about 15 min to get there. But with Lawson 100 and Daikokuya supermarket just around the corner, its quite easy to get cheap bento or small things.
Free wifi is a bonus
