We were really looking forward to some authentic Japanese tempura (light chilled batter). We looked up Tripadvisor and saw that this restaurant was ranked 12 out of 3,012 in Kyoto. I don't know how it was ranked this high as both the pork and prawn were just deep fried in bread crumbs and the food was average at best.

We loved the alleyway type entrance to this lovely, casual tonkatsu restaurant. There is an English menu, but the place was filled with locals. The yummy pork cutlets are served with miso soup, all you can eat rice, cabbage and pickles. Staff was friendly and the decor is really nice. This is not a hole in the wall, very nice ambiance and great food.
If you've never tried fried pork cutlet ( tonkatsu) you should! They give you a bowl of toasted sesame seeds that you grind up...and then add the sauce to it.. Dip your pork slices in this and enjoy!

Went to the other location adjacent to Daimaru. They don't take reservations, food was terrific. Never had tonkatsu with sesame seeds. Didn't think I would like it, but man - do it! Some of the best katsu I've had anywhere! Went on New Years when all other restaurants were booked and full. Great when you can't get in elsewhere.

Katsukura is a pleasant dining room a bit east from Teramachi-Sanjo. Tonkatsu is great -- and inexpensive -- casual fun food, and they do it very well indeed. You grind your own sesame seeds to mix your own sauce, either regular or (not very) hot. Excellent choice for a quick dinner after the rigors of shopping Teramachi Street and Arcade. Would be great for kids.

Easy to find, this restaurant is situated at the beginning of Taramachi Gallery in the street Shijo Dori.
It was a very nice experience, the meals are very good, quality and served with japanese sauces.
The mix Sesame Sauce-meals is surprising.
