“Georgeous garden as part of restaurant, vg food & service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

This restaurant is hugely popular in Kyoto for several reasons. The food is excellent, as is the service. But the single most distinguishing aspect of this restaurant is that it looks out onto its own private beautiful Japanese garden. There are floor-to-ceiling windows allowing you to look out into the garden as you eat.

It's extremely beautiful and so mellow to look at this garden as you eat. Came here as part of a group of 14 people. This was one of our favorite restaurants over a 2 week period in Japan.

“Nice garden, shame about the restaurant”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

We went to this restaurant because of the reviews and were extremely disappointed. We had much better food on our trip in much less well known restaurants.

Four of us had made a reservation through our hotel. The meeter/greeter told us that for some reason the reservation had not been accepted and he had told the hotel this. He then made a show of doing his best to accommodate us, it was clear that he was doing us a favour. He found us a table for four. We recognised a couple dining nearby who had also been told there were no tables.

We ordered our meals. The service was slow and the waitresses were not that good which we found to be quite typical in tourist restaurants. Meal one was delivered very quickly, grilled seafood. It had clearly been lying around for some time as the meat was cold and rubbery. Later, two other meals arrived, nicely presented but rather bland. The only meal that actually had to be cooked was fish head, which took ages to arrive, despite repeatedly asking the waitresses.

When we ordered our meals we also ordered tea. This surprised the waitress who was clearly unfamiliar with tea. Throughout the meal we kept asking for tea but by the time we had finished eating we had only received two small cups each.

Poor meal, lousy service.

“Unforgettable experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2013

Although we were at this restaurant at the beginning of this year, I need to say that it was one of the more if not the most delicious places we ate in Kyoto. We were leaded by our tour guide, Yoji, who explained in perfect Spanish what we were eating... I will never forget that Japanese soup called "udon". It is a oasis in the middle of the city. Besides this restaurant is a historical place. Excellente service and nothing to complain about, only compliments. You can also enjoy the beautiful gardens. And extremelly cheap, the opposite perception we all have about Japanese culture, full meal including beverages for three persons were about 50 USD. Please dont forget not give tips, it's offensive in Japan, they don't accept them.

“Excellent place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

We went there with our Japanese friends so the ordering was "easy" for us, although they speak English at the restaurant. We had a separate room, very private. The food was excellent and its presentation was fantastic. The restaurant is located in a historic villa buiding on the banks of Takasegawa river

“Great food in a beautiful old building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

Went here on a Friday lunchtime where no booking was required. Extensive set menus and also individual sushi item menu. Very reasonable prices for good quality sushi and sashimi. The venue is great as per prior reviews and it was a great end to our time in Kyoto. A great option!
