“Creative food”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We booked this place for dinner and really enjoyed the experience. Finding the place is not trivial and after walking in the area quite a lot, we took a taxi that was able to get there only after talking with them on the phone.
Food is creative, ingredients, taste and presentation. Most of the many different dishes were to our liking. It is modestly priced and therefore well worth the visit.
One point that needs to be improved is service. Our waiter only knew very basic English, thus it was difficult to understand what we were served. I think that many people come here to have an experience of ingredients, tastes and textures and would love to be able to know a little bit better what they are eating.

“Soul kitchen”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

This was really a cool place! Thanks to the dutch guys we met on the top of the Mori Tower in Tokyo, who recommended this place for us. Exciting and creative meny, cool and clever staff. I also heard that the glasses, cups, plates etc was made by local designers, very nice. Probably the chefs outfit was made by a local designer too, it looked great. It is the kind of place that attracts creative people. We met serveral artists the evening we were there, and had such a great time.

“Simple setting, surprising great food!”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

As a food and restaurant lover, this nice, simple decorated and a ltiile hidden away place is a gem. If you want a surprising, very nice looking and great tasting dinner, don't hesitate a second!
Value for money is enormous! Nice staff, good english when we were there.
If you like delicate food, in a suprising menu, go!

The place is situated on a little street on the backside of the sunroute hotel. You can easily miss it. No big signs.

Compliments!

“Disorganised - disappointing”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Arrived in Kyoto and phoned to see if it might be possible to have my birthday dinner at Giro Giro Hitoshina the following evening at 7:30. They offered us a choice of 5:30 or 8:30 - we opted for the latter.

Arrived the next day at 8:25. They looked for our booking - first on one sheet of paper, then another, then another - all seemed very confused. They couldn't find the booking. I showed them where I'd called on my mobile. Still confusion. I could see their booking schedules - scribbles all over, very disorganised.

Eventually they said it was tough luck, we couldn't eat there. They were apologetic but offered no explanation.

I was very disappointed.

“Delicious Modern Kaiseki Food at a Reasonable Price”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Honestly, for the price you pay for this meal and the food you get, people can't really complain or compare it to higher end Kaiseki restaurants. It's just not fair! Giro Giro Hitoshina serves a set 10 course meal for dinner that changes their menu monthly depending on what's in season. It's priced at ¥3,680 (or approximately $37 CDN) for the entire set dinner menu which we think is a sweet deal considering the other restaurants we've dined at that serves set menu in Japan.

We sat at the bar so we could see what the chef prepare the food in front of us. In addition, it allowed us to interact with the chef a little despite the language barrier and the fact that they don't speak much English. We blogged about our experience at the restaurant and included photos of all the food that we had there so for anyone that's interested in reading a thorough review about Giro Giro, check our blog out: http://skinnychopsticks.com/giro-giro-hitoshina/

The only reason why we wouldn't give this restaurant 5 stars is because the service wasn't exactly quick (They had one waitress on the floor during dinner time!) and we weren't attended to as much by the staff. Service aside, food was awesome. Lunch is not served here.

Note: This place is pretty hard to find. In fact, it's concealed in an alley way. It doesn't help that their address isn't available on Google Maps either... We have a picture of their business card with their Japanese address on it on our blog that will be useful to show the cab driver as ours didn't understand the English address shown here on this website.
