This hotel underwhelmed me when I first arrived - but ended up being significantly better than those first impressions - hence my rating of 4.

It’s in a good location not far from Gion, Teramachi, and Nanzenji Temple. Several little supermarkets nearby.

I had stayed the previous 2 days Gracery Hotel Kyoto - in a "run of house" room - which I got at a bargain price. I paid a bit more to stay at Eco & Tec. (But way less than the Emperor's Birthday weekend prices at Gracery Hotel which is why chose Eco & Tec).

The Gracery is a far superior place to stay if you can get it at a special price, but if you can't get a low rate, thaen Eco & Tec is adequate. If you are a single traveller and/or female and/or 60 years+ you will find it a comfortable & safe, though basic, place to stay.

Note: The glass sliding doors to the balcony are also the only "window" - and mine were frosted - meaning that when the doors were closed - you can't see out - which felt a bit claustrophobic to me. Plus my bed faced away from the window (to see the tv) and had only little head support as it is not adjacent to a wall. I ended up keeping the door open most of the time and cranking up the air conditioner to stay warm.

One pillow only on the bed.

There IS plenty of storage, and a good size fridge and freezer.( I think these rooms used to be apartments.) There is a microwave in the dining area.

There wasn't a kettle in the room - luckily I found out I could “rent one for free” from reception - and kept it in my room for the 3 days I was there. There are no cups and utensils in the room - but if you're a budget traveller - you'll no doubt have those things with you.

(Note: The hotel had a flyer which advised that if they had school children staying the dining area is closed to everyone else during meal time - so best to check with the hotel if you don't want to be there with a group of school-kids.)

Would I stay at Eco & Tec again - yes - if the prices at Hotel Gracery or similar were out of my price bracket.

Room tip: Ask for an end room so you aren't sandwiched in between 2 apartments/balconies. Avoid room 201 - its right near the stairs.

I was recommended by a friend to stay in this hotel. My room is nicer than I expected considering the price. It's clean and the staff is helpful. I especially like the washing machine which save me a lot of trouble. The location is convenient too.

In comparison to other hotels, this venue is well ranked on tripadvisor for a much cheaper price with excellent cleanliness and room conditions. Of course, you pay for what you get. It's a budget hotel with small rooms and a very small bathroom. The bed's mattress is hard and same with the pillows which are filled with something like rice and/or beans. Fortunately, I had a twin bedroom to myself, so I was able to use 2 pillows to better support my neck and to have a bit more space to move around. In the communal area, there is complementary water, tea, and coffee with access to crockery and a microwave. There are a limited number of bags containing 3 small pieces of different breads/buns/pastries for breakfast and free massage chairs are provided.

The hotel is accessible from Kyoto station with bus 5. It's also equally close to the Tozai subway line. And it has tourist sites within 5-15 minutes walk. There is a nearby vegan & gluten-free cafe/restaurant, a basic french cafe, a pizzeria, McDonalds, and a handful of local Japanese restaurants. As a solo female traveler, I felt very comfortable walking down poorly lit and, at times, non-populated streets to access the hotel.

The staff are friendly and will try their best to assist despite their limited English. I also found it very quiet on the floor I was staying despite there being a few other hotel guests on that floor. The wifi in my room was excellent.

Simple and clean hotel. Rooms are not very fancy and new, but clean and comfortable. Very friendly staff that helped us to plan our trip in kyoto and choose the best transportation for each day. The location is good, and it is easy to walk from the hotel to some of the temples in higashyama area. The hotel provides complementary pastries for breakfast.
