“Must stay here!”

Kyoto was the highlight of our trip to Japan and Divyam's sage advice made sure we made the most of our short stay. Highly recommend taking Divyam's advice on where to eat and what to see. We will be going back next time we're in Japan.

Yonbanchi was our first stop in our Japan stay & it was a great introduction to staying in a Ryokan as it is clean, homely & peaceful, a great place to come back to after a long day of walking or cycling around the sights.

The hosts Divyam & Yasuko are welcoming & full of the best information & local tips on how best to enjoy the sights of beautiful Kyoto

I recommend Yonbanchi to travellers looking for a traditional & more personal experience. You'll be sleeping in basic homely accommodation in a large tatami mat room on very comfortable futon & enjoying a chat with your host's over a delicious breakfast.
Although traditional Yonbanchi has wireless internet

Ask Divyam where the local Sento (bathhouse) is & have a soak with the locals after a hard day of sightseeing, you'll love it !

When we come back to Kyoto Yonbanchi is where we hope to stay again

The best part of the Yonbanchi experience is the conversation and insight from your hosts, who speak English, are knowledgeable about Kyoto, how to get around, and what places are worth seeing.

Accomodations are not luxurious, but are not meant to be. You'll find yourself with more room than a business hotel, and the comfort and feel of a home.

The best tip I could provide is to be sure to rent a bike if the weather is nice. It's the best way to get around Kyoto, even for sites across the city.

Me and my spouse were initially thinking of taking a ryokan, but when we saw reviews of Yonbanchi, we wanted to give it a try. And i must say, we made the best choice. Yonbanchi is a traditional samurai house with only two guest rooms. We took the one on the first floor. The house is quite nice and we were happy that we are living in an actual Japanese house and not in a hotel.
Divyam and Yasuko are really nice hosts and both speak English. They were very pleasant and we had a great time during our chats over breakfast.

Our room was simple and neat, with tatami mats, and big enough for two people. And we never had the feeling that we were missing any essential stuff. You can access the internet on Divyam's laptop anytime. Divyam is very knowledgeable about the places to go in Kyoto and was also helpful in making us a schedule to see the best places in kyoto in the limited time we had. ( 2 days). Be sure to take his advice.
We also were able to hire some bicycles with Divyam's help with no deposit :-). The bicycle store is quite near the house. The best way to see Kyoto is on a bicycle, so be sure to get them.

To some, the house may seem distant ( its in the north-east of Kyoto, and nearly 1 hr from the train station by bus). And the house itself is a little difficult to locate on ur own, but Divyam was kind enough to pick us up from the busstop. You can always ride ur bicycles in the city, and me and my wife never felt that we were far away from any of the major attractions. The philosopher's walk is also quite near the house.
We have already decided, that if we ever visit Kyoto again, Yonbanchi is the only place we would like to stay.

If you're looking for luxury accomodations this place is not for you. But it is clean, affordable, in a decent location, and best of all is a really cool old samurai house.

Yonbanchi is a small (2 guest rooms) bed and breakfast in a quiet area of Kyoto near the Silver Pavilion and the Philosopher's Path. It sits on a one-block street with the Shinny-do Buddhist temple at one end and a Shinto shrine at the other. It is a pleasant walk to a bus stop where at least 5 bus lines converge.

Yonbanchi is inexpensive and basic. Futons on tatami, rice paper walls, a bath shared with the owners (the shower and the Japanese toilet are in different parts of the garden), and a very nice continental breakfast. The house is old and aesthetic in a quiet, unassuming way. There are lovely gardens in both the front and back. This is not a western-style hotel and it is far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kyoto (thank goodness).

Divyam and Yasuko are very pleasant. Both speak English. Divyam speaks French and Yasuko speaks Japanese. Divyam's knowledge of Kyoto and the surrounding areas is incredible. He has a sense of both efficiency and aesthetic that makes his suggestions for planning time in Kyoto invaluable. He was gracious in allowing us to check email on his computer. He enjoys conversation.

There are several good restaurants within walking distance. Omen is not to be missed.

  • Liked — location, authenticity of surroundings, and helpfulness of owners
  • Disliked — steep stairs--try to book the first-floor room
