My husband and I stayed in this ryokan for 6 nights without meals. The family who run this ryokan are very friendly and hospitable and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. For the price, we were quite pleased. It is located about 2mins from Kyoto main station which is extremely convenient. There is free wireless internet access which is fantastic! And a free to use computer in the common room for internet use, as well as some books.
Some things to be aware of - this is a ryokan, so sleeping on the floor is a feature of this style of traditional Japanese accommodation and can be hard to adjust to. Personally I found it pretty difficult to sleep on the floor on the first night but adjusted after that.
The toilet and bathroom are shared, but there aren't very many guestrooms so at least you're not sharing with heaps of people. There is a common bath and two people are allowed in at a time, which is nice. It feels a lot like staying at a Japanese friend's house. Yes, the shared toilet/bathroom situation is kind of a downer, but the great location and the charming service more than make up for it.
There is a cat, but she is on a fixed leash and can't go into the guest rooms.
The lady of the house speaks pretty good English and is very helpful and friendly, as are the rest of the family. And coming back from a day of sightseeing to a tray of green tea and Japanese sweets is just delightful.
