The Nihonkan Hotel is a budget friendly Japanese style hotel about two blocks from the central train station in Kyoto. Beds are traditional Japanese style mats on the floor. The hotel is clean and simple. The staff are friendly and speak enough English to help with whatever you need. You can pay extra for a room with a private bath or use the communal baths. There is no wi-fi but there is a computer for customer use. There is a "curfew" which states you must be in by 11pm which wasn't problematic as we were tired from sightseeing all day. I would definitely stay there again but would pay extra for the private room which has a bit more space along with its own bathroom.

I stayed a couple nights at Nihonkan ryokan and it was a great place! The staff is super-friendly, going out of their way to help. The room was in typical tatami-floor covered japanese style, with a rice-filled pillow. The shower is a shared room with a japanese-style bath. The only downside was smoke coming either from outside or my neighbour, I'm not quite sure...

I was in Nihonkan ryokan for a night but i had really loved their effort to help also who can't speak fluent japanese. They can speak english, and for a low price (you are in the center of KYOTO!!) you are near all the principal way to visit Kyoto and Japan also. They was very kind and take care of my luggage after i chek-out to let me have a last visit of the city and a good aikido lesson nearby.
Clean bath and a big internet (32inch Sony Bravia) station, near restaurants and shopping places!IF YOU VISIT KYOTO AND WANT A JAPANESE EXPERIENCE;VISIT NIHONKAN ;)

From the outside it looks like a plane house, but in the inside allready from the entrance it looks like a traditional style ryokan. The staff is very friendly, but unfortunately there are some rules like you have to be back before 11pm. and you may only take baths between 7am-9am and 5pm - 10pm. And there are no wifi so you have to use the cabled internet in the communal room. The futons are nice and the pillows are abled to sleep with if you turn them upside down., though if you have a pillow fight you might get a brain concusion if you get hit in the head with them.

Great service and all that 4/5

We booked at the Nihonkan as it was pretty much the only budget accommodation available in Kyoto on short notice. Whilst we appreciated being able to stay in a traditional room, the hotel is in need of complete refurbishment. The lavatories are communal (although literally just next to our room) and sinks for face washing and toothbrushing were on a corridor. The communal baths were cramped and dated. The room itself was large, but the futons were two singles although we had booked as a couple. The main thing which I found difficult was the strict 11 o'clock curfew - we arrived on the dot to find the host ready to lock us out!

The location is good, and close to the central station, so provides a good base from which to explore Kyoto, but I could not in all honesty recommend this to other travellers.

We stayed here for two nights. As other reviewers have stated this place is Japanese ryokan-style, with mattresses on tatami mats on the floor. We didn't have a private bath so used the shared facilities, which were clean enough, certainly better than most hostels I have stayed at (personally I would class this place as more of a hostel than a hotel). Plenty of space in the rooms. Walls are thin, this is definitely not a good option if you are looking for privacy. The shared Japanese bath rooms (where you shower/bath with others) may not be for everyone either, although there is one private bathroom for those that are not comfortable with the concept. The location is great, just several minutes walk from Kyoto station. Staff speak limited English but are polite and helpful. There was a free internet machine for use by guests. Despite the thin walls I slept very well here, and obviously much cheaper than standard hotels...This is a great option if you are on a budget, for those that need space and privacy this is not for you. Also note the 11pm curfew, although Kyoto is not really a party town so this was not a big problem.

This hotel is clean, and close to the Kyoto train station. It's good value, but don't expect a lot of frills. It's Japanese style accommodation -- futon on the floor, no beds. Some rooms have baths, but usually you need to use the community bath in the basement. It's very clean, but older folks may have a difficult time with the narrow stairs down to the basement. Overall, good value.
