This hotel is not cheap but overall it is a good standard. It's located in the Gion area of Kyoto with quick walking access to the bustling narrow streets, where traditonally the Geisha's would have been located. The highlight of this area is the Kennin-Ji Rinzai Zen temple, a short walk away - a stunning place and not too tourist focussed. This was the first Zen temple established in Kyoto.

Back at the hotel, the traditional Japanese rooms have futons, low chairs, excellent bathrooms and some free-ish wi-fi. [Hot tip - plug into the wall LAN if you want proper bandwidth.]

If it was cheaper then it would be 5* rated on trip advisor - but then you are dealing with high demand all year round in this amazing city.

As other's have observed the staff are super helpful, even selling you bus tickets to get around the city cheaply.

Three stars max, and a major disappointment re: authentic Japanese experience. I stayed with a family (three persons altogether) in a Japanese-style room, paying something like $330 a night. No breakfast included, no restaurant on the property, go find one in town. No pool, no gym, no folksy looks, apart from the tatami-clad room with mattresses on the floor. I understand a Japanese-style room means minimal furniture. What I do not understand is why even the terrace with the western-looking beach tables and chairs was closed and off limits to the guests, in spite of a pretty good weather in March. Anyways. Maifukan looks like a western-style hotel without western amenities. If you want an authentic ryokan experience you should look elsewhere. You won't find exposed wooden beams, a hatched roof or an inner garden here. And you won't find a restaurant, a breakfast, a gym or a convenience shop on the premises. The price is too steep for a basic, although, yes, a clean and generally nice, room.
Pros: the internet included. Yasaka shrine is next block, and it is 3 mins walk to the old town throughfare. It's 2 bus stops away from Sanjusangendo. The location is very good indeed. The staff was helpful with maps and advices. Cons: see the above.

Room Tip: I stayed above the ground level; I guess all of their rooms are above the ground. Othhe rthan that...

This hotel is in a great location - a beautiful quiet street a few minutes walk from the main Gion area. We explored south one day taking a bus to Sanjussangendo Temple and then walking back exploring highlights on the way. The next day we went north starting at the Silver Pavillion and walking back.
The staff are wonderful - very helpful and friendly and happy to assist with advice for getting around. They gave us a lovely little map with a number of restaurants marked on it which was very useful. The coin operated laundry just across and up the road was great after traveling for a week. All in all highly recommended.

Room Tip: Some rooms are japanese style with futons set up each evening and other are western.

Stayed here for 4 nights with my wife and 2 kids.
Stayed in a Japanese style room, which was big enough (just)
Pluses
Great staff, who will bend over backwards for you
Amazing location, one of the most beautiful roads in old Kyoto
Very clean
Negs
Staff speak little English ( I speak even less Japanese)
Rooms are small
Expensive, but you pay for the best location anywhere
No eating facility..... This is a small point as there are a hundred zillion restaurants in walking distance!
Overall, a great Ryokan style lodging in an amazing location

Maifukan is a great place to stay when doing some sightseeing in Kyoto. The location in Gion is great and is within very close walking distance to various temples and restaurants. I referred to as a Hybrid experience because from the outside it looks like a modern boutique hotel. However you have the option which I did take to stay in a Japanese style room. So while you have a modern bathroom, you have a nice Japanese style room with Tatami and futon etc. I felt that my trip to Japan would be incomplete without trying this out.

The staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked for help in getting around the area. I guess my only gripe would be this isn't one of those places that has its own cafe built in where you can get breakfast or have a snack instead there is a fancy French restaurant which I did not check out. However I was aware of this in advance and it had no impact on my trip. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Kyoto and would recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: Try a Japanese style room while enjoying a modern bathroom!

I stayed at Maifukan Feb. 2-3, 2011. My room was great--big for Japan, great bed, good-sized bathroom (for Japan), nicely decorated. Beautiful rooftop terrace to use when the weather is good. Coin laundry close by is open during the day. Several nice restaurants in the area.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. I speak Japanese, so I can't comment on their ability to communicate in English. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty; when I asked them if they happened to knoe of a temple or shrine in Kyoto that sells pet omamori, they did an exhaustive Internet search and came up with a list of places, then plotted them on a map so I could decide which one to visit!

Although the hotel is a bit off the beaten path, that might be a plus, since it allows you to explore the back streets of the area between Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple. If you have jet lag early in the morning, it's a beautiful area to explore around sunrise! It's only about a 2-minute walk south of Yasaka Shrine, and maybe 5 minutes from the bus stop with luggage. Taxi to the station when I left cost about 1000 yen and would be the best way to get to/from the station when the buses are crowded.

Price is very reasonable for what you get. I would definitely stay there again!

We had a Japanese style room of about 8 jo (x 1,6 = sqm), clean, new and nice. Nice bathroom and washlet toilet. Fridge with 2 bottles of water every day, water cattle to boil water in. With a convenient store on the ground floor, it`s been easy to do self-catering. Many great sights and the huge Maruyama Park accessable by foot.
This was our chance to have a nice trip with our 18-month-old son, coming back to the hotel for his napping time, having enough space also for ourselves.
Whatever we needed (additional stand lamp for reading at nights), the staff helped us very kindly.
Any time again!
