We were utterly disappointed with the experience at Sakanoue. Firstly the facility is old n dirty esp the toilet. We were asked not to wear slippers in room but the floor is so dusty. Food is also underwhelming

We booked one night at Ryokan Sakanoue with the kaiseki dinner and breakfast included as a special treat for the last night of our Japan holiday.
My only regret was not staying longer. The location in the heart of Gion, Kyoto was amazing. The staff couldn’t do enough and it was beautiful to see them in traditional kimono.
The room was by far the most spacious we stayed in on our trip and had a private onsen. There was an option to use the family onsen on site privately also.
The dinner was incredible. They were works of art you nearly felt guilty for eating and ruining the asthetic. We tried so many new foods, all delicious and expertly prepared. Our hostess was professional and really funny. We were also provided with yukata, jacket and tabi socks to wear and fill compliment of toiletries and necessities provided in the bathroom area. This stay was the highlight of our 2 weeks in Japan. I only wish we could have stayed there for our entire Kyoto week.

It was hard to find this Ryokan initally. Both the taxi drivr and the google map took us to the back door.
But once settled, the location was perfect. Great Staffs, nice cozy beds. But not a big fan of their dinner and breakfast.

Stayed one night. Guidebook recommended if staying in a ryokan was part of our plan, we should try to do it in Kyoto. We Sakanoue is near Kyoto Station but in a quiet, mostly residential neighborhood. A family of four, we booked a 10 tatami mat room which included a kaiseki style dinner and breakfast the next day. Upon check in is when you book the time for both meals. Room was spacious with separate “foyer” and bathroom. Low table and chairs with no legs were all the furnishings so it was a different experience than a hotel room. After a gourmet kaiseki dinner, futons were laid out. We all slept well on the futons. Notably, all the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Even though their English was limited we could still communicate. Breakfast was kaiseki style again and Japanese food. Food was styled beautifully and delicious although I imagine people with less adventurous palates might be at a loss. There were a lot of thoughtful touches, like a
Thermos of ice water left for the night. All in all, it was a great experience.
