My mother and I visited Japan back in 2007 and the Karatachi was our first experience with a Ryokan. It is perfectly located near the beautiful Fushimi-Inari shrine and very close to the trains. I loved everything about our stay here, it was such a great experience that I'm hopefully bringing my mother and a few extras back in 2012. :)

Didn't want to stay anywhere touristy, and chose this tiny family home near Inari Shrine, and conveniently located for the train to Uji, too. A bit tricky to find, but lovely neighbourhood and very welcoming family. The room was lovely, the breakfast was outstanding. Not so good for nightlife, as the family will stay awake waiting your return! Would stay there again.

This is a traditional ryokan located 3 train stops south of Kyoto Station. Due to Kyoto's excellent bus and train system, there isn't a bad location around town. This ryokan is next to the Keihan line and a 3 minute walk from the JR Inari station and the Fushimi Inari Shrine.

There are only 5 available guest rooms which makes it quiet and cozy, but also no private baths. This means you have to schedule your shower and bath times, this was never a problem.

Thr rooms are reasonably sized, very clean and comfortable. Mine was well insulated, as I could not hear the trains in the mornings at all. The bath and shower rooms were very clean and shampoo, conditioner, soap and pre-pasted toothbrushes were provided.

The hostesses were very friendly and accommodating, though English is very limited. Whenever I stopped in during the day, there was always hot tea and sweets brought out to me.

The futons were comfy enough, but the pillow was pretty hard. The Japanese breakfast was fantastic and far more food than I could eat.

There is an 11pm curfew so if you are the type to party all night, this isn't the place for your. However, if you're looking for a nice, clean comfortable stay in a ryokan, book this one.
