When we arrive at the Hatanaka, the staff is friendly and welcoming. The room is great, spacious and bright. We thought we have to experience a ryokan stay if we are travelling in Japan for 2 weeks and we are glad to choose Hatanaka, Part of the reason, they host a Maiko show and dinner on site. The whole experience at the show and dinner was fantastic. It was thoroughly enjoyable and fun. The food was immaculately presented and scrumpious though the whole experience was quite costly. There is only one complaint, the pillows are not comfortable to sleep on. Other than that, we really enjoyed our stay at Hatanaka. The staff was standing on the footpath waving us goodbye as we drove off in the cab. They were exceptionally helpful.

First of all Kyoto is a must do when you travel to Japan. We stayed in this Ryokan 3 nights (should have been 1) I am always in to other cultures so sleeping in a Ryokan was one of them. Service , Location , room it is all more than ok BUT NOT for Euro 450,-- a night !!!!!!! Sleeping on the floor for this kind of money is ridiculous !!!! So go here for 1 night take the Geiko dinner drink a lot of sake (you might not feel the ground) and close your eyes when you pay the next day !!!! Paid in The Ritz Carlton Tokio the same price which is really 5***** ++ hotel compared to this one Ryokan Hatanaka has 1 star. Conclusion very very expensieve nice experience.

This is a nice ryokan, with a pleasant decor and a fantastic location. However it is ridiculously over priced, so much so that even though we had a nice time here it still left a bad mark on our trip.
The room was very nice but as most ryokan rooms very basic, although we felt they could have done a lot more and should have considering the price. Everything was as expected with your futon being made adn put away, a lovely dinner and breakfast served in your room, but it felt like a hilton ryokan, nothing was special and for the price you expect amazing.
The location is fantastic, right in the heart of the Gion district and a great base to see kyoto.
If they dropped the price by 50% it woudl still be expensive for what it is but the location would make it worth it, as it is I would not recommend staying here.

A good location. Very nice stuff. but still, to describe this place as luxury can creat a strong disapointment. it was our 2 last days in Japan. we wanted and expected the best. this is way we have agreed to pay 219,000 yen or moore then 1000 euru!!!! per night for a family of 3 with breakfast and dinner. yes it is an expierence but maybe for 1 night. do you know any luxury place that charge you exrta for cup of tea you make in the room? the food is ok if you realy like traditional food.

We stayed at the Hatanaka for two nights, first of all the try a Roykan and to try the famous Kaiseki dinner. This was quite an amazing experince, where you changed close into some kind of comfortable clothing (I don't know the name) and from there the service started with tee, cakes and so on. Service was excellent and the food was quite some thing. The presentation of the food was so beautifull and quite in tune with the collors of the fall. At night time our room was prepared for sleeping, which ment taking out some madrasses, which was layed out on the floor - after two nights, we looked really forward to come back to a normal bed.
The Roykan was situated excelently in the middle of Gion, where we could walk to most of the cultural attracktions of Kyoto.
