If you want an incredible experience then this is the place to come. The location is absolutely spectacular, sitting next to a large creek with a steep hillside of trees directly opposite and behind the hotel. The whole area is just trees and temples and it is very relaxing and beautiful. We spent an afternoon exploring several temples and enjoying walks through the forest, it's idyllic.
The ryokan was probably built in the 60s or 70s and has a mix of that era's decorative style along with traditional Japanese culture and it really works. The staff were the friendliest and nicest we have ever met, they made us feel so welcome and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We had dinner there are and it was a delicious feast of traditional sashimi and tempura, laid out in a traditional style for us. It was a great experience!
The rooms are how you would expect. The bedding is futon style but the bathroom etc are all modern (for the 70s anyway). It was spotlessly clean and really cute.
We took a local bus from Kyoto staion (45 minutes) and were picked up at our stop by the staff. On the way back he dropped us off at a train station and the train took 20 minutes back to Kyoto station. It couldn't have been easier and you really feel you are in nature.
We can't recommend a stay here highly enough, it is one of the best experiences I've had and I'd definitely love to come back for another stay.
