“Impeccable service, great location, cozy room”
Reviewed March 17, 2011

This ryokan truly made the kyoto ryokan experience memorable. The service was impeccable - great english, recommendations for restaurants and sight-seeing, amazing dinner and breakfast, massages in room.

Shiraume is on one of the cutest streets in Kyoto. There are a few plum blossom trees right out front and there were tourists taking pictures of the flowers and the cute street every time we went outside.

I was at first skeptical of sleeping on the floor with just mattress pads, but I was pleasantly surprised on how comfortable this was!

Have nothing new to add to all of the previous rave reviews but a stay at Shiraume is well worth the expense. We only stayed for one night and it was a night that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Absolutely loved everything about it and we all fell in love with Tomoko! Just amazing.

we stayed 4 nights with two children in the umegae room with private bath and two toilets. from the moment we got out of the taxi late at night from a long flight, stepped onto the bridge to the front reception area, wow..... we truly felt like we were in a movie. this area is so well preserved in history and they are incredibly proud of their heritage and culture. Ms Tomoko Okuda is an exceptional host, the staff are all so genuinely happy that you are there and helpful in every way. The traditional breakfast is amazing, the fish is like nothing else you have ever tasted. You must do the Kaiseki dinner at least once, served in your room if possible. the gion is a step back in time with food and craft everywhere you look. hard not to go into every shop and buy. Shiraume is located within walking distance to Kyomizu-dera area with many shrines. the subway is only 100 metres away and easy to use if you take the time to understand, if your stuck you can ask the station staff. not much english however you can get by, by saying the place you want to get to. Nijo castle is a short taxi drive. hail the taxi in the street in the direction you want to go. very easy, and don't open the doors, they are automatic and the cost is very reasonable. i cannot recommend this old ochya, now a ryokan too much. if you do not experience Kyoto for the first time at Shiraume, you are truly missing out on a life changing experience, especially if you are travelling with children... the culture experience is so important. Some have commented on the expense of this type of accommodation, however you must understand that the staff are there catering for your every need, and there are only a few rooms. the food is prepared just for you at the time you wish, the chef goes and collects wild food from the mountains just for you. This is art at its highest form.....exceptional.

Overall Atmosphere: Quiet, understated elegance
Staff: Incredibly friendly and attentive. Mrs. Tomoko Okuda is fluent in english.
Room: beautiful, lovely view by the river
Food:
Kiseki Dinner and Kobe Dinner both highly recommended! Very tasty, original and varied
Breakfast: We chose japanese style and loved it.

All in all: The price is reflected in the service. Treat yourself, you won´t regret it.

this place should not be missed. Clearly the highlight of our entire two week trip to Japan. Be prepared to be taken back to another time, a time when service and ambiance mattered.

The inn has been run by one family for 7 generations. The food is outstanding (we had the traditional dinner served in our wonderful room), the location can not be beat and the staff is topnotch.

Worth every penny !!! For a real traditional Japanese experience, this is the place to stay. We look forward to returning.

This was our first ryokan experience and I must say it brought down the standards of other ryokan that we stayed along our trip in Japan! the service that was provided by Tomoko and others were like 5 star. Tomoko was so kind to provide us with a map of Kyoto and places of interest when we arrived. We stayed in the Umekoyomi room for 2 nights. This room is on the ground floor with the river view. Every morning, there's a very beautiful crane on the river. This room was also infront of the private jacuzzi bath, which was really relaxing after walking around the whole day. The dinner served was really delicious. We had kaiseki dinner and Kobe beef dinner on the 2nd night. One of the dishes include fugu (puffer fish) which was really unique to us. I also had umeshu that was homemade by them which was really delicious. Tomoko said that they have a small little cellar underground, which they used to store the umeshu and the plums were from the plum tree infront of the ryokan. Breakfast in the restaurant was great too, we sat infront of the window having breakfast and saw snow fall. It was a beautiful sight. Tomoko gave us a small gift after checking out, which was a incense from Kyoto. All the staff were really warm, friendly and very hospitable. We had a really memorable stay here and we will definitely come back again to this ryokan if we go to Kyoto.
The location of this ryokan is good as well, since it is in the gion district. Its near Nishiki market, Yasaka Shrine, and walking distance to Kiyomizu Temple. Finding this ryokan was easy, we got out of gion-shijo station using an elevator, walk along a river, then turn right when we saw another small river.

When we first started planning our trip to Japan, we decided we had to go to a Ryokan, and after MUCH research, decided upon this one. It ended up costing us a bit more than we expected (we got the exchange rate slightly wrong!), but it was completely worth it.

Pros:

1) The amazing traditional japanese meal we had, served to us in the dinner room on our own, looking out at the plum blossoms above the little canal. Tomoko explained to us what each, incredibly intricate, piece of food was, how it was made and how it was good for you, it was just delicious!

2) The deep cedar baths in the bathing rooms - you book one and they will fill it for you and then reserve it for you for half an hour...fantastic!

3) The kimono and pyjamas in the room - very nice touch!

4) Breakfast served in your room, tasty!

5) Tomoko has fantastic english and is able to offer advice as to what to see, and how to get there, and just about anything else you would care to know - an amazing hostess.

Cons:

1) I found it a little difficult to sleep, as we were in one of the rooms at the front of the house and since you are in a reasonably lively part of Kyoto, there is some street noise! Also, the futons are not the most comfortable in the world!

All in all, I would strongly, strongly, recommend this place for a short visit for an experience of a Ryokan, and an amazing culinary experience.
