The hotel itself is somewhere in the level of a trendy Marriott Courtyard. I mean that as a good thing. It's a bit trendier, has more muted colors, but offers the same level of adequacy and value that Marriott Courtyard hotels tend to offer.
The decor in the rooms aren't particularly notable, but the rooms are clean and relatively spacious (for a Japanese hotel). The bathrooms are typically Japanese (small), but clean and adequate. You have a plastic booth for a shower (actually, it's very reminiscent of the shower stall in Bruce Willis' character's home in the movie, "5th Element"! Overall, there isn't much to complain about here. It's not a five star hotel brimming with top-flight amenities and service, but a very competent 3.5 star hotel.
As my wife and I were there during new years eve, and the hotel is right near the street leading directly into the temple (many Japanese celebrate new years eve in the temples), room availability was limited and we were left with a twin room (two beds instead of one). However, we were able to push (roll) the beds together to form a king-sized bed and slept quite comfortably.
The staff is friendly and makes a concerted effort to accommodate you as best as they can in their limited English.
The best aspect of this hotel is the location. It is on the main street, but not right in the middle of everything where it's noisy. It's a short walk from the train station, all of the restaurants and bars are nearby, the food carts are just steps away, and, as I mentioned earlier, the street leading to the temple with all of the yummy food carts, is just a block away.
A 3-rating may seem low to the people who run the hotel or the people reading this. But it's not. I truly hope to stay there next time I visit Kobe, and I really have no complaints. I just think that the ratings need to accurately convey what type of hotel travellers should expect, and it's not a 4 or 5 star hotel. It's a 3.5 star hotel and it's very good at what it does.
