Kobe Portopia Hotel
Ranked #8 of 117 Hotels / Ryokan in Kobe
Certificate of Excellence

In Kobe for business and found Portopia ideal as our office was within 5 minutes walk. I had a room in the South wing which is separate from the main hotel and would ask to be in the main building if visiting again. Breakfast was OK but get in early if there are a number of tour buses or you might end up waiting in line for 15 - 20 minutes for a table. The courtesy bus into Sannomiya was reliable but once again if you are aware of the departure time get to the stop 5 minutes before hand to ensure a seat. Staff were courteous and servicing of room excellent. If you are traveling to Portopia from Kansai airport, recommend you consider the ferry service to Kobe airport which was efficient & well priced. You can catch a cab or the monorail from there.

This hotel is just fantastic: rooms are comfortable with a beautiful view on Kobe Habor, beds and toilets are perfect, and the hotel's ground floor is just a great place to be, even just to relax. All this, for a price that's really convenient for an hotel like this! Ok, the position is not the best one in the world, but guests have an astonishing free shuttle services from/ to Kobe's city centre and Kobe Harborland. Even if the shuttle service doesn't run till late, there's also a metro station close to the hotel, to which it's possible to go from the city centre even at late night.

Been living in Kobe for many years every time friends visit this be
autiful sea side city Of Kobe , The hotel recommend the most has always been portopia hotel located in the man made island . 8mn ride from kobe airport if you come over by flight. Or 8 mn from sannomiya station if you use either Kansai airport or Shinkansen from Tokyo . The rooms on the 24 th floor have a breath taking views ..the price starts from 9000 yen for singles on a quite season. Good value for money , the morning breakfast on the top floor restaurant is a bit expensive but worth the price. Too many choices . Self service and at the same time you can enjoy wonderful Kobe from the sea .they have a very spacious rooms and refurnished recently with enough art decort to make you feel on a peaceful resort of Bali.- huge swimming pool if you plan to visit in the summer . A very reasonable kobe beef steak restaurant on the second floor and an exotic French restaurant on the top floor very gastro the ex Alain chapel .most of the hotel staff are professionals which means an excellent service a la japonaise is on the menu .there is even a free ride bus either to sannomiya station or shin Kobe every 30 mn or so what do you expect more .bons vacances a Kobe

I am presently waiting for a bus from Sannomiya to return to the hotel that is 30 minutes late. The hotel advertises its complimentary shuttle so
despite the hassle of going to and from Port Island to stay, we took a chance based on positive reviews of the hotel. (Could have taken Port Liner but that adds ¥1000 each way for a family of four; had to do it once already today due to bus delay earlier.)

Also thought it would be an easy walk to IKEA, but since the south wing where we stayed doesn't have an exit out in that direction, it was a circuitous route.
Very pricey stay for a quad room that barely had any outlets, and an outdated
bathroom. Charges for water and coffee in room.

Had wanted to stay in an Oval Club room for pool access, breakfast etc but was told they have no quads on the club floors. Other hotels provide club privileges even if one doesn't stay on club floor. Not family friendly.

I will say that the woman at the front desk was very kind and had excellent English.

For the rate we paid, on a less crowded weekend we could have booked two twin rooms at the Westin Osaka or St. Regis instead. Unfortunately this time around there was no availability.

Apart from the location being on the Port Island and not in the Kobe city this place was wonderful. The room was so spacious, the service top notch and the interior beautiful. The hotel has many restaurants serving various cuisines but we only stayed for one night and didn't get to enjoy all the amenities.

There's a huge pool which we did not use since it was 6 degrees Celsius outside! The room had a great view of the airport and the sea beyond and the railway weaving through. The other wing probably had a view of the Rokko Mountains.

Really great hotel all around.

The Portopia is on an island right next to the convention center in Kobe. Since the area is a bit isolated from the restaurant/bar scene, I would recommend it to convention goers, not sightseers. The rooms are big for a Japanese hotel. Mine in the Southern tower had two large twin beds, a twin sofa bed, desk and chair, and soft chair and table. You could also go out on the balcony and enjoy the view of the port. The beds are firm -- hard for Westerners but this is quite common in Japan. On the plus side it's quiet and newspapers English or Japanese are delivered daily. Having stayed at the Portopia about 17 years ago, I felt as though I had stepped back in time. Although the rooms are very clean, and the bath/shower are spotless, the couch and chair need to be replaced. They, as well as the carpet, are worn (mine had cigarette burns in it even though it was a non-smoking room) and when you enter the room it looks as though the section with the beds has been redone (new wallpaper) but the rest of the room is very much in need of a fresh look. There are only a couple of outlets which is very inconvenient. On the other hand, WiFi is free. Most Japanese hotels offer a package deal with breakfast (I didn't get the deal). The breakfast buffet is about $28.00 per person -- a bit pricey. I did eat dinner at the hotel one night and it was quite good. Communication can difficult if you don't speak Japanese but they have several employees who speak English if they are on duty. If you are sightseeing, it's better to stay in the Sannomiya area -- much more convenient. Also, the Portopia provides a free shuttle to and from Shin Kobe station if you don't want the hassle of taking the subway and the Portliner to the hotel. I would stay here again if attending a conference but not for pleasure.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor if you want a nice view of the harbor!
