We were on a cruise and had an afternoon to spare in Kobe. Travelled from the port via a good tram system into the centre of Kobe. A business man on the tram got into conversation with us and explained on how to get to the Herb Garden via a bus that goes from across from the shopping mall the tram terminates at. He came and made sure we got the correct bus, you pay when you get off via a machine near the doors (so change is required). 3 stops up the road we got off and from there was the point we saw the chair lift upto the gardens, although if you are fit and able you can walk up. We passed a dam and waterfall on the way up.

Views are really good, it was a nice spring like day but a little chilly. Unfortunately there wasn't much flora out at this time but it did not take away the tranquility of the gardens and I am sure it changes once all the flora is out. It is on a hill so if you have knee problems a walking stick would be handy. There is a couple of restaurants and shops on the site. There is also a glasshouse with some oriental plants and a couple of water features.

This expansive herb garden is built on the side of a mountain, making the hike up a challenge and the walk down leisurely. Even though we went in early spring, some of the plants were starting to bud and the smell from the lavender garden still lingered from past autumn. We were among only a handful of people enjoying the lovely peace of the garden which has every kind of herb and edible/medicinal plant you can think of. We spent several hours slowly meandering our way around and through the garden, from the top down to the mid-way cable station.

I imagine in summer it must spectacular, in full bloom with the air heavily perfumed. At night, it's open for romantic walks. The view of the city was amazing, and with the night lights, would be even more so. Our next trip to Kobe is planned for summer, when we can enjoy this brilliant garden again. Would have gone twice had we been in Kobe longer. Of course, you can walk through it in less than an hour, see everything and take pictures - but it's so much more relaxing and rejuvenating to take your time.

For 100Yen, about $1, you can soak your feet in a lovely herbal hot spring foot bath (the $1 is the loan of a small towel to dry your feet). Trust me - a terrific way to relax aching feet after days of walking around.

Price is about $14 for the cable car to get up the mountain and entrance to the Herb Gardens. Note: it is cheaper to buy combo tickets at the Crown Plaza hotel at the cable car's base.

We used to hike up this hill. Now there's a ropeway that carries you up in less than 5 minutes. You can still hike up and view the Nunobiki Falls from the ground, or from the air on the ropeway. Go at night for a spectacular view!
