To be honest, we have never paid this much for a hotel before. So we didn't quite know what to expect. But if hotels are rated from 1 to 5 stars, this would be a 7. The staff were exceptionally accommodating. The room had stuff in it that you wouldn't dream of looking for. They even had slippers for my size 11 (USA) feet. The lunch was really good. The Breakfast was incredible. Where else can you go and get a tray with 5 different fruit juices? They kept bringing course after course, plate after plate. We were stuffed. And that's saying something for a 250 pound guy.
But what topped it all was the bed. We have a tempurpedic at home, and that doesn't hold a candle to this. You lay down, and sink. But it's not soft, it's very firm. You would swear it was massaging you, without moving. It had all the support you could ask for, but soft. I overslept. And being in chronic pain, that usually means waking up and going for the pain meds. But I had no pain. You have to experience this bed! And the food! And the service!

So this is basically a B&B in Kobe (maybe slightly larger). Looks like someone's European house from the 1800s. Keys are metal and old school. Breakfast was meh. They took a normal continental breakfast and fancied it up a bit (e.g., took juice and made a juice flight). There is an awesome chinese restaurant across the street though... I know you are in Japan why go get Chinese food, but it is really good.... like "don't miss it good".

The Kitano area of Kobe is a quiet residential area within walking distance of Shin Kobe station. December is always a hectic month and Christmas in Japan is another hectic working day. While we live in Osaka, not far from Kobe, and wanted a quiet place to refresh and enjoy some good food on Christmas Day. The Kitano hotel is perfect for R&R. The hotel is a lovely 5 story brick building with European antiques. Our room was on one of the back corners and the size of a suite room. The hotel is famous for its french restaurant - and dinner was one of the best french dining I have had in Japan. Our server help pick some excellent wine and I have to say it was one of the best I've had as well. Breakfast was equally wonderful filled with European style breads, jams, ham, yogurt and strong French espresso cafe' ole. The only issue I had was there was no internet service but this is common in the older hotels in Japan. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for place to escape to for some R&R and European atmosphere/hospitality. While on the high end of the price category, the service and value is better than many higher priced hotels.. Don't miss wandering through pearl shops. Many pearl importers are located in Kitano area and offer good pricing and unique styles -- the Kitano hotel was a great place for a romantic getaway for us. The hotel also would be a great place for a cozy wedding - with more fun than the other "staged" ceremonies one traditionally finds in Japan .

Room Tip: Rooms on the back corner are the largest.

First off just want to say we love Kobe. The city is fascinating in many ways and for Westerners (English speaking), it's a great base for exploring the central Japan region (Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji, etc) with convenient bullet trains zipping you to all the major destinations under an hour. We arrived at the Kobe Kitano after a week in Tokyo. We chose the hotel due to its reputation as something different from what you'd expect from other hotels. And yes it is different. I'd say it's like staying in an upscale French hotel in the middle of Kobe. The rooms, decor, service all seem to be up to the highest French standards. Which is not by coincidence but by intent given the proprietor and head chef, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, spent a lot of time in the Francosphere learning about French hospitality and gastronomy. Which brings us to the next really amazing aspect of this complex. Aside from the great rooms and space and the first-class service where every need is met, you are faced with a dining selection that is formidable. Hiroshi Yamaguchi is a rock-star in the world of gastronomy. To experience his creations is magic and a dining experience you will never forget. Smart guests should most definitely take the dining option when making reservations as it offers exclusive access to the great chef's delectable menu. It is not cheap but as I said this is a splurge choice for Westerners traveling in Japan and for those who seek a little touch of France as a respite from Japanese culture and cuisine.
