“It felt like the true Japanese experience.”

Loved staying at Ryokan Sansui!
The location was great, on a quiet street next to the river. The tram stopped less than a block away and took us directly to Hiroshima Station.
Also within a block was a friendly little Spanish bar, which we tried out on our first night in town. It was great, and a quick stumble home after several glasses of Sangria.
There was a great little French restaurant on the opposite side of that street with a single patio table that beckoned us on our second night. We sat there happily sipping wine and tasting the various dishes that the chef decided to make for us; we had a language barrier, so we just basically rubbed our stomachs to indicate that we needed more food and he kept it coming.
It was wonderful, and not at all expensive.

It was a pleasant 10-15 minute walk to Peace Memorial Park and the A-Dome...after spending so much time on bullet trains on our whirlwind week in Japan, it was nice to take a break from public transit.

Our room was as tiny as I had expected, which was fine. The roll-up beds were very soft and comfortable....we slept like babies! There was a kettle in the room so we could start our day with some tea. The woman who runs the ryokan is a gentle and sweet person who speaks just a tiny bit of English, just enough to give us directions to restaurants and the Peace Park.

I had a bath late one evening, as I noticed that the shower room is meant for one person or a couple. If the ryokan were full, it might be a wait to shower in the morning.

All in all, a great experience. I would definitely stay there again!

This was our first experience of a Ryokan (Japanese Guest House). The owner speaks little English, but is very obliging and tries very hard. We managed to communicate very well.

The rooms are small, but are made up for you when you arrive. Its shared bathroom, which is downstairs, with toilets upstairs. Rooms very clean and tidy, not good for views though - we looked at a wall outside of our window.

It is the other side of the river from the city centre, but its 5 mins walk to the peace park, and several good resturaunts. There are also some other resturaunts closer which we didnt try. There were also a number of large hotels in this district. Easy to get to from JR station by tram and 1 min walk.

Recommended for first time Ryokan-ers!

The location is the best! The ryokan is steps away from the tramline (streetcar) to Miyajima Island (definitely worth a visit) and the Peace Park / Atomic Dome in the other direction. The Peace Park / Dome can also be reached by a short walk from the ryokan.

The host was lovely, very helpful, and patient with me making etiquette mistakes in my first visit to a ryokan. She also provides an excellent map of the public transport options as well as maps and guides for Hiroshima and Miyajima and gave some good tips on how to get around as well. For example, if you have a JR Rail Pass and are travelling to Miyajima it is cheaper to get the tram to Hiroden Nishi Hiroshima and then change for the JR train to Miyajima-guchi. The tram to inner-city stops is a flat-rate of Y150 and the train is free for JR Rail Pass holders. If you get the tram all the way to Miyajima-guchi it will cost Y270. I tried both options and if the connections were good, the tram+train option was also much quicker than the tram.

The rooms in the ryokan are a reasonable size. There was a table and room to walk around the tatami when it was unrolled. I was travelling by myself with only a small bag but I think an extra person and suitcase would have fit comfortably, especially if the tatami was rolled up when not in use.

If I was visiting Hiroshima again, I'd definitely stay here.

we stayed there for one night, didn't have any other option in the price range due to high season. The room was 4.5 tatami, we're short people but still could hardly fit our luggage and lay the futon on the tatami - opening the door became a real challenge. I don't know about the other rooms, the place certainly wasn't busy, we might even have been the only guests. I could hardly understand what the lady owner said in her Japanese-English pidgin, but she was quick to collect the money. She was not as welcoming as some other reviews might suggest, and strikes me as being a little mean, even disconnected all the funky toilet devices (warming, spray etc.)

We booked this ryokan over the phoen (in English). The lady didn't speak much English but did her best.

When we arrived, she was at the door and gave us a wholehearted welcome! After showing us the room, then she proceed to tell us all the attractions around the hotel (Peace Museum, etc) within walking distance and where we could get cash, food catch the tram, etc. Very friendly hostess. She also takes a picture in from of the ryokan with all her guests (there's one full wall with all the pics).

The room is rather small but with all the things you need. I'd recommend it if you are not staying for very long.

Booked thru Hostelworld.com

Got some bug bites outside the door so use repellent. It's nearby the waterway. Very steep stairs which are not very deep so if you're wearing those mandatory slippers which never fit can be quite dangerous!

It's quite hot upstairs but the A/C does work well. No privacy in the wash area; no door; not a room really; just a sink and vanity in the hallway. Shower area is adequate downstairs under the stairs.

Location is just OK kind of a long ride on the trolley from the JR station but if you're going to Miyajima anyways you're kind of halfway there. Ryokan is half a block from the trolley.

Owner is a lady who tries to be very helpful, but English is limited. Best to give her a map and have her draw the directions. Not a lot around the hotel in terms of stores.

  • Liked — A/C worked well
  • Disliked — Room weren't too soundproof; could hear each person walking on the floor or using the wash area.
