“Practical and nice”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

Have stayed here with my wife for three nights: 03rd, 04th and 05th of April. The initial plan was to stay only the 04th and the 05 of April, but some unforseen changes in our planning made us to request accomodation also for the night of 03rd of April. The staff here was very helpful as they were able to accomodate us on the 03rd of April even if we asked them to do this with only one day in advance.

The room: quite small, but nice. Half traditional accomodation, as there were no paper walls, only the tatami on the floor. We slept in the Japanese way in Japanese pajamas, which was nice. The air conditioner worked fine, we could heat the ir in the room by using it.

The breakfast: being in Japan, we choosed the Japanese style. We haven't traveled 10.000 km to eat Western food in Japan ;-). Good and fresh food containing rice, fish, chicken, soy sauce, fresh sliced fruits, etc.

The staff: actually, there is only one lady which takes care of the facility. She barely speaks english (10-15 words, maybe), but we could understand also thanks to the Japanese words which my wife knew and also thanks to the mimics.

The atmosphere is nice and we really liked the Tea Ceremony which the lady of the house arranged for us. It costs 1500 JPY, but it worth the money, it is quite nice. Those money are to be paid to the person which hosts the ceremony, not to the lady at the ryokan.

All in all, we have enjoyed our stay at this ryokan. If we will come to Hiroshima again, for sure we will stay here.

Very well located and easily found from the StreetCar station around the block.

(Incidentally you must go to the OkonomiYaki kitchen for lunch that is adjacent to the streetcar stop near the Ryokan. its run by a lovely lady who will cook up this local delicacy for you at a fraction of the cost for the in-town places - look for the orange awning and green astro/fake turf matting outside. go in and try out your Japanese, it really is excellent).

Back to the Ryokan, rooms are good, Wi-Fi free throughout and excellent speed - we managed to 'be at' a friends wedding back in the uK via Skype!

Shower room is shared but only one person at a time.

A fun experience, but make sure your back home by midnight, or the landlady might lock you out.

Room Tip: the one directly above the entrance was well sized.

Very good location and the what a lovely lady the owner is. She even gave me a photo of my stay to take away with me!
I only had two nights in Hiroshima and it rained the entire time so I do have to revisit.
Will definitely stay here again. Very close to Peace park and shops and I did find a very lovely coffee shop close by.
I did struggle with the floor bed but that's due to being western and the stairs are a little steep but take your time and pack light.

Oh, I would like to adopt her as my nan... Was basic but at that price I was fine with that. Had a lovely welcome and a lovely breakfast the next day made with care. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly. :)

What makes Sansui special is the woman who runs it, whose warmth and welcome come through despite her limited English. Our room was decent and the location was very good: walking distance to the peace park and easily tram accessible. As these were our primary requirements, we thought the inn was a good value for its price. My one complaint is that the hallway smelled overwhelmingly of body odor, but I hope that was due to other guests and thus a passing problem. We did not find Sansui as charming or memorable as some of the other reviewers, but it is fairly priced and was convenient for a short stay in Hiroshima.

We stayed at Sansui Ryokan for two nights as part of a wider tour of Japan. We were met with a very warm welcome. Our names were written on a chalk board outside and we were immediately asked to pose for a photo for the visitors wall (hundreds of photos of every guest). The owner couldn't speak much English but told us the important stuff and issued us with all the maps and information we needed. She was so, so lovely. When we left she took another photo and stood in the street waving with both hands until we were out of sight! Rooms are small and not en-suite but everything is clean, comfortable and very very twee. This ain't the most luxurious place you'll stay in but the cute twee factor makes it a great place to rest your head for a night or two! Hiroshima is an incredible place. The memorials are so moving. Would highly recommend a trip over to Miyajima Island. Stunning scenery and deer everywhere! Don't miss Hiroshima and if you're ready for the small room and steep stairs, don't miss Sansui Ryokan where you'll receive a very warm, smiley welcome!

great spot and the owners were super nice. we had a great time and hired bikes from them and cruised around the city (although riding to the museum of modern art is not recommended. the gallery itself is great, but the ride is STEEP). rooms were clean and quiet.

yes, the stairs are a bit steep and the doorways are low - this is Japan remember. it's traditional accommodation so you're making your bed at night and packing it away in the morning. if you're looking for a western hotel experience, probably best to visit a western country. if you're looking for some true, homely Hiroshima hospitality - you're on a sure bet!

Room Tip: be nice to your hosts and they'll look after you!!
