Toyoko Inn Hiroshima Heiwa Odori
Ranked #33 of 121 Hotels / Ryokan in Hiroshima
Reviewed January 7, 2014 via mobile

The hotel is located in the commercial area, and it just takes within 10 minutes to Hiroshima Memorial Park on foot. Room was bit small for two (as usual for business hotel in Japan). Price was very cheap for vacation season..about USD 35 per person per night with breakfast of Japanese traditional new year foods.

To get to the hotel for the first time from Hiroshima station, I would probably take a taxi. But once you check in you can get your bearings by walking along Peace Avenue towards the museum. As you walk to the museum, you will notice that you cross a tram (#1 and 5) that go to the port. So the next time you return to the hotel from Hiroshima station, take #1 or 5, and walk along Peace Avenue to the hotel, about 15 mins. From the bridge, look for the Denso building and walk towards it. Across the hotel, there is a 7/11 and next to the 7/11 is a big dept store called Fuji Grand. There is a good sushi place in there. Also a pharmacy. The ceramics store has a lot of Chinese made pottery (not to my liking). There is also a bistro with decent food. The staff is pleasant, tries to please, but do not ask complicated questions in English. I didn't know how to tell them that the room safe was locked and I couldn't use it, so I just dropped the issue. The transportation to Hiroshima station is every 20 mins, and you sign up on a board next to the desk. The breakfast was good, no sausage, but there is boiled eggs for protein. The highlight of my trip was Miyajima Island, and next time I would try to get a hotel on the island.

I recently visited 5 cities in Japan and stayed at Toyoko Inn, a chain of budget hotels that is popular with the locals. They offer free Japanese basic breakfast and discounts if you join their Club. Their room rates are very reasonable and although the rooms are small, I did not feel uncomfortable at all, and they are certainly clean and tidy. Of all the Toyoko Inns that I stayed in, I enjoyed the one in Hiroshima Heiwa Odori the most mainly because the rooms are larger and there was less people during my stay. Also, the hotel's location is ideal for visiting the Peace Centre as it is an easy 20 minute walk along the boulevard. All around the vicinity of the hotel are small restaurants, bars, convenience stores and shopping mall, plenty to take up at least 2 or 3 days stay. Highly recommended

Staye two nights as part of a group tour. The rooms are basically all the same at Toyoko Inns-small, clean and they have everything that you could need. This one even had mini van service to and from the train station.

Main issue was poor quality of internet service in rooms, and lack of staff at the desk to answer phone.Little English is spoken, and it took over 5 tries for someone to reach me by phone.

Good location for the Peace Park, and tons of restaurants in area.

This budget hotel had been booked by our tour company so we weren't sure what to expect. We travelled around Japan for just over two weeks and stayed in Toyoko Inns in Matsumoto, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Yokohama (but they're everywhere) and found them convenient, clean, friendly places to stay.
The hotel is located on Haiwa Odori or Peace Avenue which leads directly (a brisk ten-minute walk) to the Peace Park in the centre of the city and a short five-minute taxi ride from the railway station.
The hotel is just a short walk from an area of restaurants and bars so you don't have far to go to find great places to eat and drink (or a long walk back afterwards).
Reception is simliar to most Toyoko Inns - plain and has a few tables and chairs where breakfast is served in the morning. Staff were friendly and helpfully spoke English. Check in time of 3.00pm is strictly enforced so you won't get into your room until then.
Rooms are clean and well maintained and have 'module' bathrooms with deep baths, shower and 'electronic' toilets with bidet-type spray washes. Breakfast is Japanese style with rice triangles, miso soup, seaweed and pickled vegetables, rice, noodles and to drink green tea and coffee.
The hotel has free wi-fi in the reception area, where there are also drinks machines (water, beer, cans of coffee, juices etc.). Helpfully, if you're travelling around a lot, there are laundry facilities too - coin-operated washers and driers and powder for sale.
Don't expect fancy and all the extras of a luxury hotel but you won't beat the value for what you get.

Room Tip: The higher the better so you get the good views across the city.

Stayed in this hotel for the second time: first time was in 2006. The hotel was not changed: quick checkin service, rooms were of decent size, twin beds were comfortable. Bathroom amenities were plenty. Mayor plus: free breakfast (they have added Western style breakfast to the Japanese style since last time. It is walking distance to the shopping streets and Peace Memorial Park.

Room Tip: Book directly on the Toyoko inn website for best rates, no prepaying required

I've stayed at a few Toyoko Inns and they are all great. They've all got a fairly good location, they come with breakfast and their staff have a reasonable command of english (enough for simple communication anyway).

The rooms are small of course but its big enough for me and there's enough space that you don't feel claustrophobic. The bed is comfortable, there's a tv, airconditioning and a small fridge. The bathroom is a bit small for my liking but well you can't have everything, its decent enough for the budget price that you're paying. Also the whole hotel and the rooms are very clean.

As for the location of Toyoko Heiwa Odori, it was okay. It was convenient but not very, very convenient, its a fair bit to walk to either the memorial or to the shopping area. Maybe 15 mins? I didn't time it but I remember walking quite a bit. And you know what? This is probably a short walk for some people anyway.

Also, they've got a shuttle car that drives you to Hiroshima Train Station every half an hour (I can't remember the intervals but quite frequent). I found this very convenient because the station really is quite far and when we left Hiroshima it was raining heavily, so thank goodness for this shuttle car! Also I guess I should mention that getting from Hiroshima station to the hotel can be complicated if visiting Hiroshima for the first time (unless you take a taxi of course). You've got to take a street car to a stop (can't remember which) and figure out how to pay the street car because you don't pay till you get off! Then you gotta walk another 15 mins to the hotel.

Anyway I'm not complaining, just stating what I went through. Great hotel, I loved it.
