Owner description: This skeleton of a building is all that remains in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on August 6, 1945, and serves as a symbol of both the horrors of atomic war and the hope for world peace.
Reviewed March 7, 2014

On 6th August 1945, the city was in ruins, and over 100,000 people were killed when the world for the first time saw that a nuclear bomb was detonated. Today, a simple dome-shaped ruin building as a reminder of the enormous devastation caused the explosion. One of only eleven building that stood within a 5 km radius after the bomb. it was beautiful but very sad.
Close by is the beautiful peace park with a peace flame, which will only be extinguished when the last nuclear weapon is destroyed.

The Dome itself is just a half destroyed building, but it has such a significant historical significance that it is well worth a visit. I would recommend going to the Memorial Museum first to gain an understanding of the history, and then walking over to the Dome through the Memorial Park.

I have seen the dome in schoolbooks, bit it gives you a different feeling to see it in reality.

A "walk by site" (have a look, read the posters, take a picture) from the tramway station on the way to the children's memorial and to the peace memorial.

The dome is very easy to get to and is surrounded by very well maintained gardens, water features and is hawker free.

It is a sobering experience seeing the building as it first looked after the dropping of "little boy". Take the time to do some reading before hand on Hiroshima during the war as this helps put things into perspective.

Overall a must see and a piece of history that strikes the core.
