Located inside the Nijo Ichiba(Market), Donburi Chaya is one of my stops whenever I'm at Nijo Ichiba. Nothing fancy, just good food. The kaisen don(asssorted fresh seafood on a bed of rice) is one of my favorites, along with ikura(salmon roe) and kani(crab) don. Prices are reasonable, I think you'll like it.

No stop to Nijo Market isn't complete without a fresh seafood rice bowl. Donburi Chaya is one of the more popular ones. Expect to queue & wait up to 40 minutes but it is well worth it. The shop is small, seats around 20 odd people. Prices a bit high being a touristy market. Service is average.

We had 2 types of rice bowls (donburi) - the trio of tuna (minced, sliced & roe) & the premium seafood (2 types of roe, shrimp, crab, tuna, skip jack, butter fish & salmon) & a grilled mackerel to share. The seafood were all fresh & tasted great. The rice done right. Loved the grilled mackerel (huge) with its oily crisp skin & tender flesh.

A great brunch indeed. Highly recommended. It's an awesome experience.

In the center of the Nijo Market, you will miss it unless you search the interior. It certainly does not get any bonus stars for ambience or decore. The seafood, however, is above par. The rice in our kaisendon was better then we have found in other bowls while in Hokkaido. The winning dish though was the butter grilled hotate. One was not enough!

This would be an easy four stars if the location was a bit closer to center town and classier. If you are at the Nijo Market area though, it is definitely worth a meal.

Had traditional don breakfast with the family during our visit to Nijo Market. The restaurant is located in the middle of the market, but is not easily missed as there are a lot of photos of rice bowls adorning the entrance.

Service is good, with the staff able to speak some English. Menu is easy to order off, with English translation.

The seafood is fresh, but quality is only average, although the quantity makes up for this somewhat. Pricing is not exactly cheap, but isn't too exorbitant for what you get.
